Our disaffiliation process with Scholarship America is complete. Please recall that we chose to disaffiliate after Scholarship America underwent a national reorganization which would have placed additional financial burdens upon our local affiliation. We have submitted our application to IRS for our individual tax-exempt status. We will be keeping our same Tax-ID number. I personally spoke (last November) with an IRS representative regarding our application and asked when we could expect notice regarding our status. She told me the IRS is currently processing applications from March 2012 (18 months out). I asked her how this affects contributions to our Alumni Association. She told me that, based upon our conversation, the contributions should continue to be considered as tax-exempt with our application pending. If for some reason our application was denied, then the tax-exempt status of the contribution would be called into question. Personally, I feel comfortable in claiming my contribution as tax-deductible, but we don't have official notice yet.
Although we have disaffiliated from Scholarship America,
nothing in our mission has changed (we are required to drop "dollars for scholars" from our title). Our only goal is to continue to raise scholarship funds for graduating seniors of Yoncalla High School. To date (during our first three years) we have awarded more than $24,000, helping about 23 YHS graduates with post high school education. The Yoncalla Alumni Association relies exclusively on the generous giving of its alumni base, as well as family and friends.

Thank you to the Yoncalla School District -
The school district supports the Yoncalla Alumni Association by picking up the expense of printing this and the Fall newsletters - thus sending more funds directly to graduating students.
Memo From a Fellow Alumnus
Over the past few months a number us have been discussing the formation of a YHS Hall of Fame. As you know, we are a community that is proud of our YHS graduates' high school accomplishments and in their athletic endeavors beyond high school too. Recognition of those who have gone far above and beyond the norm seems a proper thing to do. There are many things that will need to be done. Some are already in motion, including research into how other schools have organized their Hall of Fame. Other things, such as finding those who would be willing to give input or work on a committee, need to get off the ground. There is an obvious need for persons from as many generations and eras as possible. If you are interested in participating or wish to give ideas, please contact Dan Gordon (70). E-mail: email@example.com and/or call 503-507-5340.
YHS All-School Reunion
- Mark your calendar for the second Sunday in August (8/10/14) and plan to attend the annual YHS All-School Reunion. Alumni will gather at Pass Creek Park in Curtin. Kay VanKrevelen (60) is, again, organizing this wonderful event.
