After emerging from their first two regular season games with a 1-0-1 record, the Tech women prepared to play host to a talented squad from Mercyhurst College for their home debut. The Golden Bears gave an early offensive push only to be stymied by the Lakers defense and physical play that set the tone for the remainder of the match. Despite their best efforts, Tech couldn’t seem to get into any sort of offensive rhythm as the relentless offensive pressure from Mercyhurst eventually won out. Tech’s Creshana Jones (Fr- Queens, NY) pushed forward for the Golden Bears first scoring opportunity of the afternoon in the seventh minute of play causing collision between Jones and the Laker’s keeper which squandered a quick opportunity for a Tech lead. Mercyhurst quickly responded with a goal in the thirteenth minute of play and again three minutes later when a Golden Bear foul in the box led to a penalty kick. The Lakers would score three more goals before heading into intermission with a 5-0 advantage. The Golden Bears came out in the second half and did a better job of controlling the game and creating some offensive momentum for the better part of the period. However, a lightening delay with about seven minutes remaining in the game would cool both teams off for the remainder of the contest. When the final whistle blew, it was Mercyhurst who dominated the offensive side of the field, generating twenty shots to Tech’s two. WVU Tech will look to rest and regroup this weekend before heading to Philippi, WV to take on the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers at 3pm.
