Every player deserves to make their own decision

September 21, 2011
By Ron Crawford of Wings Elite Basketball Club

The shock of losing Archie Goodwin to The Arch Enemy, and legendary Kentucky Wildcats, and the Coach who would not play the Hogs while he was taking the University of Memphis was tough to take for Hog fans. After 32 years of coaching and sponsoring an Elite Travel Team that has had 2 players rated Number 1 in their Class, 1981, Bryant's only Mc Donald's All American 6' 2" point guard Willie Cutts, and Russellville Power Forward, also their only Mc Donald's All American, 6' 6" Corliss Williamson, both signed with the Hogs, Cutts Started as a Freshman along side of 2 NBA Guards, Darrell Walker, and Alvin Robinson, the Center was NBA star Joe Kleine. Cutts was so far ahead of his time that he and Coach Eddie Sutton did not mesh and Cutts transferred to Arkansas State in order to stay close to his Family. Corliss on the other hand led the Hogs to the NCAA National Championship in 1984, with a 2 nd place finish in 1985. All I learned from these two different situations is that we never know how things will turn out, Cutts and Williamson are the two best players I have ever had the joy of Coaching. Archie Goodwin is the best player in America at getting to the rim, he is electric on the fast break and can finish with authority, his Highlight Video from the Dallas Session of the Spring Nike Elite Youth Basketball League shows what we saw all season. Archie works as hard as any player we have ever had, in fact the 2011 EYBL team whose games are on this page worked as hard as Coach Mc Crary, Coach Williams, and I could have ever expected, over 40 hours in 3 weeks in June. Goodwin is in the gym every day, he like his Wings Team Mates loves to play and hates to lose. After all the emotion is over we should respect Archie's very tough Decision to leave Arkansas for Kentucky, Archie has been quoted as saying that playing for Coach Calipari was the deciding factor despite a large number of vacated victories, and a tough loss to Kansas in the NCAA finals. I personally have found Coach Cal to be very approachable and personable when I have spoken with him, he Did Not Call me or any member of our Staff during the recruiting process. This decision was Archie's and with the support of his Family. Archie's Mother is very committed to academics and so is Archie, his GPA is reportedly in the 3.5 range. For a young man to be able to take the next step toward his ultimate dream of playing in the NBA is the Basketball Players goal all over the World. I know we bleed Hog Red but the young man with Arkansas Tattooed on his Chest will wear a Kentucky Blue Jersey when he steps on the floor again in Bud Walton Arena. NCAA Recruiting is the life blood of College Sports, I for one am hoping Jarnell Stokes sends Chills through the Memphis Tiger Blue in the near future, trust me Stokes would be an awesome player and a better team mate for Coach Anderson's Hogs, T.J. Cleveland has developed a tremendous relationship with the Family. Archie and Stokes are both expected to compete in the Rumble on the Ridge, over Thanksgiving weekend along with Hall's 6' 9" Forward and Razorback Commit, Bobby Portis, to name 3 of the stars that will be among the 8 teams, Bill Baxter had loaded the Wagon for Turkey Day Weekend.
