Remember to choose the amount of practice that is best for your child. Coaches will encourage wrestlers during practice, however they will not force them to participate. Parents' encouragement and enforcement during practice is helpful. Friends are welcome to try out wrestling by coming to practice. For health reasons, it is important to shower or bathe after each practice or tournament. Cancelations of practice will be on the Willmar Community Education and Recreation (WCER) hotline or Q102. If school is closed for the day or let out early, wrestling will be canceled.
1. Introduce fundamental skills for wrestling.
2. Build positive work ethic and self-confidence.
3. Learn to work as a team and show good sportsmanship.
Every wrestler will receive a singlet by giving a $30 check deposit. Checks will be returned at the end of the season when the singlet is returned. For practice, wrestlers should wear gym attire, such as shorts, sweatpants, and t-shirts. Singlets should be used for tournaments only. Wrestling shoes and head gears are recommended but not required. If you have used shoes or headgear you would like to sell, bring them to practice with your name and price on them.
Competing in wrestling tournaments is a parent/family decision. Parents will be responsible for bringing wrestlers to and from tournaments. A schedule for tournaments can be found on the Willmar Youth Wrestling (WYW) calendar. More details about each tournament can be found on the internet at www.theguillotine.com/tourncal.html. Coaches will be available to help at many of the tournaments listed on the WYW calendar. It would be very helpful if a coach is notified if your wrestler is planning on participating at a tournament. Coaches will have a weekly sign-up for tournaments.
Each youth wrestler will be able to wrestle in at least three tournaments for free. Dates and places of these free tournaments are still being determined. Registration will be sponsored by the Willmar Take Down Club.
At tournaments, wrestlers will need to register and weigh-in upon arrival. Then wrestlers may join the Willmar Youth Wrestlers on the mat to warm-up. Parents can get settled in the bleachers or help wrestlers warm up. Some tournaments have a team march-in to begin the tournament. Wrestlers are called by grade level to line-up at a designated place. Parents may go with their child and then assist at the mat when the match begins.
Team wrestling will depend on our numbers this year due to the fact that we may not have enough kids in the upper weights. We have been actively seeking more wrestlers especially in the upper weights. If anyone knows of potential wrestlers please let the coaches know and we will make an effort to talk with them. If we can find wrestlers to fill the upper weights we will have a meeting to discuss team wrestling at that time.
