Cats Take Two from Crusaders
July 9, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
The Wildcats hosted their neighbors to the west for an informal scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon and the Cats came out on top in both contests.
In the first game several of our 7th and 8th grade players got a chance to compete on the main court and they showed the future for the Cats looks bright. After leading for most of the game, Waconia found themselves trailing 35-34 with less than 30 seconds to play. That is when 8th grader Simone Talton took over. After catching a pass near the top of the key, Talton took a couple of dribbles and attacked the lane. She careened through traffic and contact to make a very tough layup, giving the Cats the lead and the win.
The “varsity” game was a flashback to the Fun and Gun Cats of last winter. After 22 minutes of running time the Cats held a narrow 40-37 lead. The came continued to be close for much of the second half but finally Waconia turned a few steals into layups and the Cats eventually built the lead to as large as 15. The final score was 87-77.
The Cats shot 42% from the floor (34 for 81) and 29% on 3’s. Megan Kirsch led the team with 12 defensive points in her first game action of the summer. Emily Anderson added 7 defensive points. The Cats combined for 14 turnovers as a team.
Waconia will make the trip to Mayer Lutheran next Wednesday for tilts at the same times. Between now and then the Cats will make the short drive to the east to participate in a tourney at Holy Family on Saturday. A last minute entrant, Waconia will take on the Fire at 11:10am before tussling with Twin Cities Metro Select, a DeLaSalle-centric AAU squad. There may also be a game at 4:30 though that is to be determined.
