THE WILDCAT WAY
HALL OF FAME
30 Seconds from the Semi-Finals
March 5, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
Wildcat fans can have a great deal of pride in their team after a heartbreaking loss to Holy Family in the first round of the section 6AAA playoffs. Waconia rallied from a 19 point halftime deficit to take a 3 point lead with 30 seconds to play, but a clutch 3 pointer by the Fire would tie the game and force over time. The Fire struck first in the OT and went on to a 101-93 victory.
It was a frustrating first half for the Wildcats as they committed 18 turnovers and allowed 15 offensive rebounds by the host team. The Cats average almost 100 shots a game but due to all the turnovers the team had attempted only 30 shots by halftime. To add to the frustration, Waconia was able to force Holy Family into 15 turnovers in the first half but on multiple occasions the Cats would give the ball right back to the Fire, effectively negating the steal.
But as has been the case all season, our Wildcats would continue to battle. The defense continued to earn steals in the second half, but finally the Cats were able to convert some of the steals into points. Waconia would shoot the three effectively in the second half, knocking down 9 after making 5 in the first half.
The Cats rally didn't even get in full gear until there were 9 minutes left in the game. A burst brought the deficit down to 12 points, but one more run with 5 minutes to play had Waconia trailing by only 5. A big 3 pointer by Nicole Dressen cut the Fire lead to just 1 with 3:30 to play.
Then with a 1 point lead and 37 seconds left, Waconia inbounded the ball to Anna Schmitt and a few seconds later she was fouled. The junior PG converted both free throws to stake the Cats to a 3 point lead, but as Holy Family brought the ball down the floor senior guard Sarah Menzuber pulled up at the top of the key and delivered the game tying three pointer her team so desperately needed.
Waconia would have the ball under their basket with 12 seconds left but a missed shot with 6 seconds to play and a failed last second shot by the Fire sent the teams to overtime.
The great rebounding that helped Waconia control the second half evaporated in the extra frame as Holy Family scored 4 points on putbacks the begin the OT.
Anna Schmitt scored 29 and Madelin Dammann netted 23 to lead the way for the Cats. Miranda Schultz was the only other player in double figures as she netted 11. Ten different players scored for the Cats.
In the end, Holy Family grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, though only 8 of those came in the second half and overtime. The Fire finished with 50 rebounds while Waconia would collect 38. Holy Family was 20 for 38 at the free throw line. The Cats went 21 for 28 at the line.
Waconia completes the season at 10 and 16 overall.
