March 1, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
It was a remarkably poor start for Waconia as the team found themselves trailing 17-1 almost five minutes into the game, but a strong second half propelled the Wildcats to a 92-78 victory over Mound-Westonka in their final regular season contest.
The Cats could not put the ball through the basket for most of the first half as they made only 4 of 30 three point attempts and missed 12 shots from one foot away. They also went just 1 for 6 at the free throw line in the opening minutes. But after digging the 16 point hold, Waconia would outscore the Whitehawks 33-21 the remainder of the half. The Cats outscored Mound 58-40 in the second half.
The three point shot was a much more potent weapon for the Cats in the second half as they made 10 of their 20 attempts. But layups and free throws were still elusive as Waconia would miss 26 shots in the paint while converting only 18. (40.8% on shots in the paint) The Cats were 14 for 25 at the charity stripe.
Waconia's defense demonstrated some discipline for the 2nd straight game as they limited Mound to just 20 free throw attempts. The Whitehawks made 15 of the free shots for a 75% success rate.
The Cats collected an impressive 29 offensive rebounds and they limited Mound to just 12 offensive boards. The Wildcat defense earned 22 steals and forced a total of 31 Whitehawk turnovers. By contrast, Waconia would give the ball away only 10 times.
Anna Schmitt netted 29 points and Madelin Dammann scored 18 to lead the offense. Ten different players scored for the Cats. Schmitt also had 5 steals and Emily Anderson contributed 4 steals.
The JV Cats finished their season with a comfortable win. The team made 11 three pointers and 11 two pointers in the contest.
The Freshman Cats scored a convincing 25 point win as well. The 9th grade team earned the #3 seed in the conference tournament which will be played Saturday at Waconia High School. The team opens action against Dassel-Cokato. Hutchinson and New London-Spicer are the 1 and 2 seeds.
Up next for the varsity is a first round playoff matchup with the Fire of Holy Family. Waconia dropped both games to the Fire during the regular season. The two teams will try to take one step towards the state tournament when the ball goes up at 7pm.
