Holy Family Pulls Away
February 27, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
After a record setting shooting performance on Monday night, the Wildcats' shooters cooled off like the temperatures and the dropped a conference contest to Holy Family 106-83 on Wednesday night.
A slow start put the Cats in catch up mode as they trailed 12-3 after 4 minutes of play. After making a charge to trim the Fire lead to 4, Holy Family finished the first half with a burst to take a 46-32 lead into the locker room.
It wasn't a lack of quality shots that cost the Cats as they grabbed a bevy of offensive rebounds, but 7 for 33 shooting from the 3 point line and 9 missed layups in the first half meant to many missed opportunities. Despite these difficulties Waconia would find themselves trailing 64-62 with 10 minutes to play and would even enjoy a short lived lead a few minutes later. But Holy Family had a hot stretch of their own, knocking down a few key three pointers to get the lead back to double digits.
For the game Waconia shot just 28.2% from the floor (26 for 92) as they were 16 for 59 on 3's and 10 for 33 on 2's (just 30.3% on shots that were nearly all in the paint). The Cats defense was strong for stretches as they forced numerous Fire turnovers and collected 21 steals. The Cats committed only 18 turnovers so it could be said that shooting was really the only glaring weakness on this evening.
Halli Koppi had one of her best games of the season with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Anna Schmitt was the only Wildcat to score in double figures as she netted 28 points and grabbed 5 steals.
The JV Cats fared far better from the 3 point line as they knocked down 10 threes in the first half alone on the way to a comfortable 82-58 win over Holy Family. Abby Gregor made a team high 6 three pointers to set the pace.
Waconia closes the regular season with a home game against Mound-Westonka on Friday night. Section seeding and the opening round of the 6AAA playoffs will be announced on Thursday night.
