New London-Spicer Wins Battle of the Cats
February 16, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
Hot shooting in the first half and a frantic comeback were not enough to overcome clutch plays by Taylor Thundstedt as #7 ranked in AA New London-Spicer topped Waconia 110-99.
The Cats led by 10 early in the 2nd half but Thunstedt caught fire from the 3pt line to put her team in the lead. Waconia would cut the margin to 3 several times in the closing minute but despite getting several steals late in the game Waconia wasn't able to convert several of the plays into points.
Waconia tied the state record for most made 3's in a game making 18 of their 56 attempts. Waconia was only 11 for 20 at the FT line though while NL-S scored 24 at the line on 38 attempts.
The aforementioned Thundstedt scored 40 points and dished out 18 assists, a total that ranks 2nd most in a single game in state history. Waconia's starters scored 81 of the team's 99 points led by Anna Schmitt with 31 and Miranda Schultz with 25.
The 9th and JV teams lost as well to mark the first time all 3 teams have lost on the same day all season. Next action for Waconia is Tuesday when the Cats take on the conference leading Orono Spartans.
