Waconia Sweeps Delano
January 15, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
It was a a good day to be a Wildcat as Waconia's teams traveled to Delano and every team came home victorious. The 7th and 8th grade Cats got the day off to a good start with wins. The 9th grade team held on for an exciting 42-40 win courtesy of some clutch Natalie Benson free throws in the final 90 seconds. The JV Cats jumped out to a 24-0 lead on their way to a 69-31 win.
The Varsity Cats had a tooth and nail tussle with the Tigers earning a 96-93 victory. Waconia led nearly the entire game, but their lead never grew larger than 6 points. Nursing a 3 point lead with 5 seconds to play Waconia was unable to get the ball in bounds cleanly so they threw the ball into the back court. Delano grabbed the long pass, got the ball ahead to one of their best 3 point shooters and her heave at the buzzer fell just short of forcing overtime.
Anna Schmitt scored a career high 41 points and made 20 of her 25 free throws. She also added 7 rebounds. Kendell Eder netted 15 points and Megan Kirsch had 10. Seven other Cats contributed points but none of them reached double figures.
Kelsey Eder anchored the defense with 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Emily Anderson had 8 rebounds.
Delano won the rebounding battle 55-40. The Tigers were 38 for 92 shooting (41%) and they were 5 for 10 on 3's. Waconia was 31 for 85 from the floor (36.5%) and 10 for 48 on 3's (just 21%).
The key to the game for the Cats was their performance at the free throw line. As a team they were 30 for 45 (67%) while Delano was just 12 for 16.
The win moves the varsity to 6 and 7 on the season. Up next is the long drive to New London-Spicer to take on the #9 ranked team in AA, the Wildcats.
