Tigers Tame Wildcats
January 10, 2014Waconia Girls Basketball MN
A hot start was not enough to sustain Waconia as they dropped a conference contest 112-98 on Thursday at Hutchinson. Waconia was up 35-23 midway through the first half but Hutch got hot and the Cats went cold and the Tigers won the next 9 minutes 39-13 to take a 62-48 halftime lead.
Turnovers and missed layups cost the Cats all night as the missed opportunities to score mounted. Combine that with the fact that after creating numerous steals in the opening minutes, suddenly Waconia could not slow down Hutch in transition.
Another key difference in the game was Hutch's dominance at the free throw line. The Tigers made 34 of their 48 free throw attempts. (71%) Waconia didn't even attempt as many free throws as Hutch made as the Cats stepped to the charity stripe 28 times and made 15 of them. (53%) So the host team scored 19 more points at the free throw line than the Cats and that was a difficult difference to over come.
Anna Schmitt scored 27 of her 33 points in the 2nd half. She was joined in double figures by Brenna Rice (17), Madelin Dammann (12) and Miranda Schult (12). Those four players combined for 74 of the Wildcats 98 points.
The JV Cats trailed by 10 for most of their game before mounting another magnificent comeback and earning a 71-65 victory. The Cats took their first lead of the game with 40 seconds to play.
Our 9th grade Cats had a tough day as they dropped a 70=25 contest.
All 3 teams return to action on Tuesday as they travel to take one of the favorites to win the Wright County Conference, the 8 and 3 Delano Tigers.
