Benilde Beats Cats 103-82
December 20, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
If one were to watch the Thursday night game on a video that never showed the baskets, they would have assumed Waconia beat Benilde-St. Margaret's by a comfortable margin on Thursday. The Wildcats took 32 more shots at the basket, created 35 turnovers and got 20 steals, and won the battle on the boards, but Waconia made only 29 of their 100 shot attempts and fell to the Red Knights 103-82.
The Wildcats had numerous layup opportunities in the first half but were able to make only 11 of their 34 shots in the paint. They finished the game 17 for 53 on 2 pointers. After a 3 for 22 half from beyond the arc, the team finally shot better in the 2nd half making 9 of 25 attempts. By contrast, Benilde made the most of their shot attempts converting 46 of their 68 attempts (67.6%). Despite the lopsided advantage in shooting percentage Waconia was trailing by only 4 with 5 minutes to play, but every time the Cats would close the gap Benilde would respond with a run to get the lead back to 10.
Anna Schmitt scored a career high 40 points and Kaylee Vanderhoff added 16. No other Wildcat would reach double figures.
The JV Cats dropped their game 47-41 and the 9th grade team made it two wins in a row as they topped the Red Knights 62-53.
It's a quick turnaround as Waconia returns to action on Friday night when they host Buffalo in just the Cats second home game. 7 of their first 8 games have been on the road, so the Waconia High School gym will be a welcome sight!
