Cold Shooting Cats Fall 99-92
December 6, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
On a night when the Wildcats did not shoot well or catch any breaks, they still managed to have a chance to win with just over a minute to play. Cold shooting and bad bounces characterized the evening for Waconia but despite those obstacles, the Cats clawed back from a 16 point deficit with 5 minutes to play to tie the game at 92 with just over a minute to play. After a steal, the Wildcats would get a clean look at a 3 point shot to take the lead, but the shot rimmed out and Chan would collect the rebound. The Storm scored the final 7 points of the game to earn the 99-92 win.
Waconia was just 19 for 82 on the evening (23%) while Chanhassen made 31 of their 82 shots (37.8%). The fact that 12 of the Cats baskets were 3 pointers compared to just 3 by the Storm helped keep the cold shooting Cats close. Chanhassen also cashed in at the free throw line in a game that featured 64 fouls. The Storm made 34 of their 48 free throws. Waconia was 22 for 37 at the line. Waconia committed 21 turnovers while Chanhassen gave the ball away 32 times.
11 different players scored for the Wildcats led by Anna Schmitt with 29. Miranda Schultz was the only other player to reach double figures with 12 points.
The JV team completed the comeback that the varsity fell just short of. After trailing by 10 or more most of the game, the JV mounted a magnificent rally and they trailed 61-60 with just seconds to play. That is when Kahner Priess picked off a Storm pass and fired the ball ahead to a streaking Ally Fuller. Fuller finished with a left handed layup and was fouled. She made her free throw with 1.2 seconds to play to secure a dramatic 63-61 win for the Wildcats. Megan Kirsch scored 13, Natalie Benson had 12, and Fuller contributed 11 points.
Our 9th grade Cats had a tough first game as they fell to Chanhasen 66-33.
The 9th grade team and varsity return to action on Saturday at Mound-Westonka. Mound does not have a JV team so that game has been cancelled.
