Both Teams Split Games in Week 3
November 3, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
The 8th/9th grade team dropped their first game of the fall to Eden Prairie before bouncing back to beat Park-Cottage Grove. Coach Neibauer said the Wildcats built up a nice lead in the Park game but a frantic Wolfpack rally fell 2 points short as Waconia held on for an exciting win. The 8th/9th grade team is now 5 and 1 on the fall.
The Varsity squad squared off against Mpls. Washburn in their first game of the day. Washburn played in the AA state tournment last season but has made the jump up to class AAA this year. They are now in Waconia's section so the game was a chance for both teams to get a sneak preview of a new rival. The Miller's are led by 6'3" Iowa Hawkeye recruit Chase Coley. Though the Wildcats had no one to rival her height, the Cats were able to contain her most of the contest.
It was disgustingly low scoring game throughout, but the Millers would prevail 22-18. Yes, that is the final score, not the halftime score. So the bad news is our Wildcats were only able to muster 18 points. The good news is they held a team considered to be in the running for the 6AAA section championship to 22 points.
The second game of the day pitted our Cats vs. class A power Maranatha Christian. Baskets were considerably easier to come by for both teams in this matchup. Maranatha led for most of the game, but Waconia would take a 53-50 lead with just under a minute to play when Anna Schmitt grabbed an offensive rebound on the baseline, put it in and was fouled. The lead would hold until Maranatha bombed in a deep 3 to tie the game at the buzzer and force OT.
One minute is the length of the over time period in fall league and at the end of the first minute, the score was still tied at 53. Another 1 minute overtime period began with Miranda Schultz knocking down a 3 pointer in the corner, but the Crusaders answered yet again with a 3 of their own at the buzzer to force sudden death OT.
The Cats controlled the opening tip and Anna Schmitt made a long pass ahead to Kelsey Eder and Eder was able to make a twisting layup to give Waconia a 58-56 win. The Varsity team moves to 2 and 4 on the fall.
Next week the 8th and 9th grade team plays at 1 and 1:45pm against Chanhassesn and Burnsville at Jefferson High School. The varsity plays at 6 and 6:45pm against Chan and the pre-season favorite to win section 6AAA, Benilde-St. Margaret's at Kennedy.
