Cats Overcome Cold Shooting To Top Spartans

February 19, 2013
Waconia Girls Basketball MN

The Waconia Wildcats concluded the regular season with a 55-49 win over conference and section foe Orono. The win would not come easy though as the Cats had to weather a frigid first half shooting performance. Waconia would make just 5 of 29 shots (17.2%) in the opening frame. In fact, the Cats converted just one shot attempt in the first 10 minutes of action. Two free throws helped the team reach the 4 point mark, but the the score was 14-4 in favor of Orono more than midway through the half.

Waconia would rally to cut the Spartan lead to two with 3 minutes left in the first half but Orono finished strong to take a 22-16 lead into the locker room. Waconia would shoot the ball more like they are accustomed to in the 2nd half as they netted 12 of 28 shots (42.8%). Orono made 22 of 40 shots for the game, an impressive 55%, but 14 second half turnovers proved costly. Another area that separated the Cats from the Spartans was free throws. Waconia was 16 for 23 while Orono made 8 of 17.

Morgan Iverson, Anna Schmitt, and Caroline Jacobs all scored in double figures. 13 of Schmitt's 15 points came in the second half, six in the final 2 minutes. Nicole Dressen cashed in 2 key free throws to make a two point lead four with just over 30 seconds remaining. Iverson and Jacobs both grabbed important steals in the closing minute to help secure the win.

Steph Dressen scored 8 points but her presence was particularly important on the defensive end. She grabbed a game high 11 rebounds and swatted a season high 9 Spartan shots. Iverson added 7 rebounds and a team high 4 steals in the winning effort.

The win moves the Wildcats record to 18 and 8, 13 and 2 in the Wright County Conference.

The freshman team finished their season with a hard fought win as did the JV team. The 9th graders ended a stellar season with a 16 and 6 record. The JV team also had a very nice win/loss record. The season is not over for the JV though as they will join the varsity in their playoff push. Section seeding will be sorted out on Wednesday evening. Check this website after 7:30pm on Wednesday for complete section matchups.

Thank you to our seniors for their great, accomplished careers, but there is almost certainly at least one home game left! Let's make the last home game a great one next Tuesday!
