Panthers Prevail over Wildcats
February 16, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
Just a few days after dominating the rebounding battle against the best rebounding team in the conference, the Wildcats would get dominated on the boards by Glencoe-Silver Lake and lost 55-53.
In their most disappointing loss of the season, our Wildcats were outrebounded 44-24. In a first half when only 2 Wildcats made baskets, the team managed to collect only 1 offensive rebound. The poor shooting first half found Waconia trailing the 8 and 15 Panthers 26-21 at halftime.
Waconia would trail by as many as 9 in the second half before rallying to take a one point lead with two and half minutes to play. The lead would not last long though as the Panthers grabbed three offensive rebounds and scored a putback while getting fouled just a minute later. Waconia came back to tie the game with just under a minute to play but a Panther player was fouled while driving to the basket with 15 seconds left. She made the first free throw to make the G-SL lead one, then she missed the second free throw and the rebound was grabbed by one of our Wildcats. Unfortunately as she collected the rebound she was pushed to the ground and the ball went out of bounds. There was no whistle on the call so the Panthers were awarded the ball.
When G-SL inbounded the ball it took nearly 14 seconds before the Wildcats were able to foul them and put them at the free throw line. The Panthers made the first and missed the second free throw to make the final margin two points.
Glencoe was 19 for 51 from the floor (37.2%) and the Wildcats were 19 for 52. Waconia was 8 for 13 at the free throw line and the Panthers were 11 for 15. Obviously things were statistically very close with the exception of the rebounding difference which hugely favored Glencoe.
Anna Schmitt scored 24 points and Caroline Jacobs netted 18. No other Wildcat would score more than 4. In fact, the rest of the Wildcats were a combined 3 for 21 from the floor (14.2%).
Waconia will need to get themselves refocused fast as they have just one game left in the regular season, a home game against Orono on Tuesday night. It is senior night, so please come out to honor the Wildcats five fantastic seniors, Sarah Christians, Steph Dressen, Fiona DeMario, Morgan Iverson, and Caroline Jacobs.
The JV Cats jumped out to a 12-2 lead but they hit a cold stretch late in the first half and early in the second half. In fact, it took 8 minutes of the 2nd half before the JV would make their first basket. But after that, the floodgates opened up. G-SL had cut the Cats' lead to 28-23 but that basket with 8 minutes to play sent the Cats on a 17-0 run that would put the game out of reach.
Section seeding will be announced on Wednesday evening, but short of any major surprises our Cats will likely host Holy Family on Tuesday March 1st at 7pm in the first round of the section playoffs.
