Cold Shooting Helps Cards Top Cats
February 2, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
The Wildcats didn't experience losing in the month of January and hadn't lost since before Christmas, but their 8 game winning streak came to a close at the hands of the #7 ranked (class AA) Annandale Cardinals.
Baskets were very hard to come by for the Cats in the 1st half as they shot just 4 for 28 from the floor (14.2%). The cold shooting created a 33-16 hafltime deficit. However, the Cats came out on fire to start the 2nd half as they went on a 14-2 run in the first 2 and a half minutes to make the score 35-30 in favor of the Cardinals. After an Annandale timeout the Cards responded with a 10-0 run of their own to extend the lead back to 15. Waconia would make two more charges cutting the lead to 6 on two different occasions, but every time the Cats closed the gap Annandale's star guard, Katleyn Kueffler, would answer with a big shot or by creating an easy shot for a teammate. Kueffler finished with 25 points.
Annandale was 19 for 48 shooting (39.5%) but a huge key to their production was found at the free throw line. The Cardinals converted 25 of their 31 free throws (80.6%) while the Cats were just 8 for 16 at the line.
Waconia had four players score in double figures. Steph Dressen led the rebounders with 12 while Morgan Iverson added 10.
The JV Cats got off to a big lead early but had to hold on for a 48-42 win. Brenna Rice was the only Cat to score in double figures as she tickled the twine for 10.
The Freshman team led from start to finish in their 41-30 victory. The scoring was again balanced and a total team effort.
All three teams return to action on Tuesday as they host Mound-Westonka at home.
