Cats Sweep Holy Family

January 29, 2013
Waconia Girls Basketball MN

The Wildcats won all three games played at Holy Family on Tuesday night meaning the Cats went a combined 6 and 0 this season against their rivals from down the road. The 9th graders set the tone with a stunning comeback win. The freshman trailed 17-4 late in the 1st half but rallied for a 37-27 victory. Hallie Koppi led the scoring with 14 points.

Our JV Cats were also winners. They earned 55-35 win. No player reached double figures in a very balanced Wildcat scoring attack.

The Varsity game was a tooth and nail tussle. While the Cats led most of the game their lead was never larger than six until 7:30 remained in the game. Four players scored in double figures led by Anna Schmitt's 19 points. Miranda Schultz hit several big baskets to net 17. Morgan Iverson had a monster game with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Steph Dressen had a strong second half to finish with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Rebounding was an issue for Waconia as the Fire grabbed 13 offensive boards in the 2nd half to keep the contest close. The second shots generated put the Cats in severe foul trouble and bench players like Sarah Christians, Fiona DeMario, Nicole Dressen, and Madelin Damman contributed key minutes and kept the Cats in the lead.

It was rewarding to see the Wildcats overcome all the foul trouble and a 12 to 1 foul differential to start the 2nd half. The Fire needed a win to have any chance to close the gap on the first place Wildcats, but even with everything to play for and several situations in their favor, Holy Family wasn't able to get past the defending Wright County Conference champions.

Up next for our Cats is a battle with the first place team from the other side of the conference, the Annandale Cardinals. Annadale is 15 and 3 and ranked in the top 10 in class AA. It is "Youth Night" with all Community Ed and WBA players getting into the game for free. There will be team posters for the first 100 girls through the doors and dozens of great door prizes handed out at halftime. Let's get a great crowd for this Wright County Conference showdown!
