Waconia Prevails Over Orono
January 22, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
The Wildcats continued their winning ways with a solid win over a good Orono team 48-35. Waconia would again get off to a stellar start building a double digit lead in the opening minutes. The lead was 32-13 at halftime.
Neither team had much success on the offensive end in the second half. In fact, Waconia made only two baskets in the final 18 minutes of action, but they played strong on the defensive end limiting the Spartans to just 3 points in the first 9 minutes of the second frame.
Waconia was 16 for 53 from the floor (30.1%) while Orono made 14 of their 70 shot attempts (20%). The Spartans won the rebounding battle 46-43 and they grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, though that number was somewhat inflated by their large number of missed shots.
Morgan Iverson and Anna Schmitt were the only Cats to reach double figures in scoring. Steph Dressen had her 4th consecutive big game on the boards hauling down 12 rebounds. Sarah Christians added 8 boards.
The win moves the Wildcats to 12-5 on the season and 7 and 0 in the Wright County Conference. A loss by Holy Family to Delano puts the Cats in the driver's seat with a two game lead in the conference title race.
The 9th grade Cats overcame a sluggish start to earn a 61-57 win. Trailing 30-19 at halftime, Waconia would tickle the twine with great consistency going on a 20-6 run at one point in the 2nd half. Hallie Koppi led the way with 17 points. Emily Anderson scored 16.
The JV team controlled the game from start to finish in their 54-34 win. Kaylee Vanderhoff was awesome in all phases of the game from defense, to rebounding, to scoring as she led the team with 17 points. Megan Kirsch contributed 12 to the cause.
Next action for all three teams will be on Friday as they travel to Litchfield to face the Dragons.
