Cats Rattle the Sabers
January 13, 2013Waconia Girls Basketball MN
The Waconia Wildcats played one of their best defensive games of the season as they topped the Shakopee Sabers 76-55 in non-conference action. After the Cats led most of the first half, at one point by as much as eight, Shakopee made a late run to make the score 32-31 at the break.
Waconia's defense would respond though with great intensity in the 2nd half. they limited the Shakopee regulars to just 17 points in the first 16 minutes of the 2nd half. Rebounding was also a key factor for the Cats as they won the battle of the boards 36-28.
For the first time all year, five different players grabbed at least 5 rebounds. Steph Dressen led the rebounding parade with 8 boards. Morgan Iverson and Miranda Schultz grabbed 6. Anna Schmitt and Caroline Jacobs both nabbed 5 rebounds. Schultz led the team with 3 steals.

The Cats also shot the ball well knocking them down at a 50% rate (25 for 50) including a scorching 10 for 16 on three pointers. Anna Schmitt dished out a game high 6 assists to aid the offense. Shakopee was 20 for 54 from the floor for 37%.
Morgan Iverson scored 17 points including a pristine 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Miranda Schultz had one of her best games of the season netting 15 points and made 4 of her 5 three point attempts. Nicole Dressen had a season high 13 points and made all 4 of her three point attempts.
The win moves the Wildcats to 9-5 overall on the season.
It was a tough night for the 9th grade team as they trailed by a wide margin at halftime before falling to Shakopee by 20. The JV team didn't fare much better as they fell behind 17-2 on their way to a 20 point loss. After the difficult opening minutes the Cats played Shakopee pretty even, but the hole they dug in the first minutes proved too much to overcome.
Next action for all teams will be on Tuesday as they tangle with the Tigers from Delano.
