Chanhassen Controls Closing Minutes for Win
November 30, 2012Waconia Girls Basketball MN
Our Wildcats played a less than perfect first half but they still managed to hold a slim lead over one of the top ranked teams in class AAAA. The Storm struck like lightning in the final four minutes to turn a 1 point game into a 72-55 win.
Despite committing 17 turnovers and allowing 12 offensive rebounds in the first half, Waconia would lead 30-29 heading into the locker room. Also working in the Wildcats favor was the fact that Chan's leading scorer had committed four fouls in the first half.
Chanhassen extended the lead to 7 mid-way through the second half before a strong push by the Wildcats would cut the lead to 1 point with 4 minutes to play. In the final minutes it was clear the Cats were out of gas though and Chan put the pedal to the metal converting several fast break layups.
Though the Storm were undersized, they controlled the battle on the boards 42 to 31. They shot 40.2% from the floor and they made their final 5 shots of the game. Waconia coverted 34.6% of their shot attempts but they got only 56 shots at the basket compared to 72 by Chanhassen. The disrepency can be traced directly to Chan's offensive rebounds and Waconia's turnovers.
Miranda Schultz led the Wildcats with a career high 9 rebounds. Steph Dressen pulled down 6 boards and had a team high 4 steals.
Waconia doesn't get much time to recover as they have their conference opener on Saturday when they host the Chargers of Dassel-Cokato at 8pm.
The JV Wildcats were down 18-0 7 minutes into their game and never got on track as they lost a lopsided contest to the Storm. The 9th grade Cats pulled off a 55-49 win. Emily Rolf led the scoring with 15 points and Raina Forcier was a force on the boards. Coach Philp said strong 2nd half defense led to some quality shot opportunities as the 9th graders start the season 1-0.
