BLISSFIELD -- Whiteford fell behind early to the Blissfield Royals Thursday, but once the offense got rolling, the Bobcats scored 31 straight points in a 37-21 victory.
"I'm elated for game one," Bobcat coach Jason Mensing said. "All of our drives were efficient. We took care of the ball. Our defense made some plays."
The Royals went up 7-0 with 4:58 left in the first half. Josh Beck put the Bobcats on the board with a 10-yard run after a long drive. Just before halftime, John Reditt picked off a Royal pass, setting up a 1-yard plunge by Beck and the Bobcats led 16-7 at the half.
Whiteford got the ball first to start the second half and held onto it until 3:54 was left in the quarter. Reditt's 6-yard run made the score 24-7. After a three-and-out by the Royals, Colin Lake scored early in the fourth quarter and the Bobcat suddenly led 31-7.
"We had balance," Mensing said. "That's what we want."
Zach Perry put the Bobcats final points on the board, via a 74-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.
Lake led the Bobcats in rushing with 71 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Beck led the Bobcats in tackles with 6.5. He added 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Troy Diller also intercepted a pass and Joe Link recovered a fumble for Whiteford.
The Bobcats spoiled the debut of Blissfield coach Adam Schiermyer. The Morenci graduate moved back to Lenawee County this past off-season to take over the Royal football program.
"I had butterflies before the game," Schiermyer said. "I told my wife I thought I might throw up or something. It was just the excitement of being back and being a part of Lenawee County football and the history of it."
Luke Cassaubon had a solid game for the Royals, running for 109 yards and passing for 72 more.
