XC teams battle it out at Beeson Park
October 10, 2010By Jerry Hatley of West Stokes High School
This past Saturday, October 9, 2010, 1300 runners from 81 schools ventured onto Kernersville's Beeson Park to get a look and a feel of the venue where this years State Championships are going to be held. The event was broken down into 10 high school 5K races, a 2 mile race for JV's, a 4 runner relay race and 2 steeple chase races.
The park itself is not very eye appealing. It is still under construction and I hope the landscaping will be much improved prior to November 6th, the date of the State Championships. The course is challenging with several small hills, long ascending straightaways, sharp turns, open fields and close trails. The runners can be viewed from several locations on the course making this a fan friendly event to watch.
West Stokes had entries in 3 events, the Boys Varsity Race, the Girls Varsity Race and the Boys Invitational. The Varsity Races were held in the cool morning temperatures and the times seem to have favored the runners. The Boys Varsity Race featured a field of 198 runners won by Chris Colo of 3A Marvin Ridge High School with a time of 16:10. For the Wildcats, Jason Barber crossed the finish line in 9th place with a time of 17:10. Nick Pinch was next for West Stokes finishing 87th with a time of 18:52. He was followed by Garrett Martin, 93rd, 19:03; Aaron Lipchak.132nd, 20:01; Thomas Hawkins 175th, 21:00; TJ Daniel,181st, 21:05 and Kenneth Erickson, 182nd, 21:11.
In the Girls's Varsity Race 161 girls took to the course where Beth Hanson of 3A Fike High School raced to victory with a time of 19:22. Erica Boles paced the Ladycats finishing 30th with a time of 21:42. Hannah Helms was 7 seconds behind finishing 36th in 21:49. Braeden Barr was 76th completing the course in 23:23. She was followed by Lakin Crumley, 92nd, 23:59 and Rachel White, 133rd, 25:19.
The cool morning temperatures turned into a very warm afternoon as the last 2 of West Stokes runners took the course for the Boys Invitational Race. Sam Roberson of 4A Broughton High School paced the field of 44 runners winning the event in a time of 16:34. Nathan Hatley of West Stokes was 9th finishing with a time of 17:38. Cameron Shaw finished 44th in 24:53.
The Wildcats next race will be on Tuesday October 19th at Dobson's Fisher River Park in the 1A/2A Northwest Conference Championships.
