Home » Boys' Basketball NewsLast second shot lifts WildcatsJanuary 12, 2010 By Robert Money of West Stokes High SchoolPilot Mountain - Brett Boyles hit the game winner at the buzzard and lifted West Stokes to a 66-64 victory over rival East Surry on Saturday, January 9th. Facing each other for the first time as conference opponents, the Wildcats and Cardinals fought to the end with neither team having a lead larger than 8-points. East Surry jumped out to an early lead only to see the Wildcats come storming back and knot the score at 15 a piece to end the first quarter. The Wildcats continued the streaking shooting in the second quarter and jumped to a 35-29 halftime lead. East Surry bounced back in the third quarter and outscored the Wildcats 17-12 to set up the last second shot. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats maintained a 4-point lead for most of the period before the Cardinals made a push. With the Wildcats leading by two and less than 20-seconds left in the game, the Cardinals sank two free throws to tie the game after a surprising hand check foul that was called on starting forward Austin Fleming, which eliminated him from the game on his 5th foul. After a timeout by the Wildcats with 9-second left, Boyles received a pass from the left wing and a drop step to the basket sealed the hard fought victory. The Wildcats (7-5, 6-1) dominated inside play with Boyles leading the way with 26-points and Fleming adding 17. Matt Covington led East Surry (7-6, 4-5) with 18. In the girls' game, West Stokes led 5-0 to start the game, but then everything went down hill from there. The Cardinals held the Wildcats to three second quarter points and capped a 35-13 run to put the game out of reach and win 56-30. In JV action, both teams from West Stokes won by one point with each game going into overtime. The JV girls (11-1, 6-0) won for the first time at East Surry in the 11-year history of the school. All teams will be back in action on Friday, January 15th when they travel to Mount Airy High School. Games will start with the JV girls at 4:00pm. Girls Varsity
