Panthers Top Chargers in Sectional Finals

The West Noble Chargers dropped a 75-61 decision to the #5 ranked NorthWood Panthers Friday night in the IHSAA Sectional Finals at Wawasee. The Chargers (18-6) fought the Panthers (21-2) for 32 minutes but could not overcome the hot shooting team from Napannee. The Chargers had four players in double figures to continue its balanced scoring attack. Senior Drew Schermerhorn led the scoring with 18 points while junior Waylon Richardson played another strong game with 12 points. 6'6" senior guard Phil Miller scored 11 points while Brandon Moser knocked down 10 points and Brandon Evans 6. Leading the the Panthers was their senior trio of Zach Zurcher(23), Jonathan Wilkinson(21) and Will Stueve(18). Zurcher and Wilkinson will be playing college ball next year at the University of Indianapolis and Hillsdale College while Stueve will continue his playing career at Bethel College. The Chargers will graduate 4 senior players off the NECC Tourney Champion team this season and they also led West Noble to a 46-23 record over the past 3 seasons. Seniors Brandon Evans, Phil Miller, Drew Schermerhorn, and Landon Stover all played their last game for the Chargers last night. Also concluding their careers for the West Noble are managers April Leitch and Sammi Patillo while the Chargers also graduate 2 Cheerleaders in Tessa Hartman and Anna Buttgen. This marked the 3rd time in 5 years that the Chargers have been in the finals and the first time since 1974 that West Noble won the NECC Tourney. The 18 wins were the most wins since the 1998-99 season in which the Chargers won 18 and West Noble did most of this while battling injuries since the NECC Tourney.
