Hornets Edge Chargers on the Hill
August 26, 2013By Tom Schermerhorn of West Noble High School
The West Noble Charger Football team opened the 2013 season in exciting fashion as they battled the Angola Hornets right to the very end before falling by a score of 16-13. The Chargers took the early lead when senior quarterback Landon Stover hit Brandon Moser for a 15 yard touchdown pass. The point after by Edgar Delgado was good to put the Chargers up 7-0. Unfortunately for the Chargers, the Hornets had the next two big plays which included a 62 yard touchdown run by Austin Bauer and a 30 yard interception return by Simon Gardner to put Angola up 14-7 in the 1st quarter.
Sophomore Damien Breetz got the Chargers within 1 when he broke loose for a 9 yard run to make the score 14-13 after the failed PAT. The Chargers then surrendered a safety later in the 4th quarter to make the deficit 16-13. West Noble had one more chance when Josh Alexander intercepted an Angola pass and nearly returned it for a touchdown before being tackled inside Angola’s 25 yard line with less than 3 minutes left. The Chargers couldn’t convert a first down and were unable to get the field goal attempt off as they fell to the Hornets by the 16-13 score.
Stover finished the night going 9 of 13 for 65 yards and a touchdown while Payton Shrock carried the ball 13 times for 69 yards. Brandon Moser led the receiving with 30 yards on 4 catches while Shrock and Josh Alexander each added an interception for West Noble. On defense, Ethan Kiser led with 6.5 tackles while Carlos Medina chipped in with 4.5.
The Chargers will next play at Eastside on Friday night with the game time being at 7pm. Good luck guys!
