Chargers Down Lakers in 9 Inning Thriller
May 2, 2012By Tom Schermerhorn of West Noble High School
The West Noble Charger campus was abuzz last night as the West Noble Charger softball team defeated Lakeland by a 1-0 score in 9 innings. The Lady Chargers were hoping for a little late inning magic from the baseball team's walk off home run as many of the fans and players from the baseball game took in the last couple of innings. The stage was set for senior Kaleigh DeBeck in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Chargers had 2 runners on base. Molly Marsh was on second and Renee Zeigler was on first when DeBeck lined a single up the middle to send Marsh to the plate with the winning run. Marsh and the Lakeland catcher collided at the plate, but when the dust settled, the home plate umpire ruled Marsh safe and the Chargers exploded into a celebration under 1st year coach Gary Groves. West Noble sophomore Kelsie Peterson and Lakeland's Ashlynn Grubb were both dominant throughout the game. Peterson ended up with 14 strikeouts while Grubb fanned 15. Zeigler and Peterson both had 2 hits for West Noble while DeBeck and Chelsea Risser each added 1. The Chargers are now 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in the NECC. The Chargers travel to Angola on Thursday to take on the Angola Hornets in an NECC showdown. The Hornets only NECC loss is to Lakeland. Good luck ladies.
