West Noble's Winter Musical

January 24, 2012
By Cliff Schwartz of West Noble High School

Theatre33, West Noble High School's theatre group's winter musical, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" is set to be performed January 27-29, 2012. Friday and Saturday the shows are at 7:00PM and Sunday is at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens for general seating. The box office opens one hour before the per
formance and the house opens thirty minutes before the performance.

Sydney's Signature Cupcakes, all with a honey theme will be featured in the concession stand at intermission.

This six-time nominated Tony Award winning musical tells the story of six eccentric kids vying for First Prize, bragging rights, and most importantly, a trip to the National Spelling Bee Competition. With music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Rachel Sheinkin, this show exudes humor, originality, and poignancy.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee ran for 1,136 performances on Broadway earning the 2005 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical

The show centers on  fictional Putnam Valley Middle School, host to the Putnam County Spelling Championship.  Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups. The 2005 the Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the U.S., including a national tour with performances in Canada, and Australian productions.

An unusual aspect of the show is that four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. Each night Theatre33 will have a local celebrity participate as one of the guest spellers as well as other volunteers from the audience.

Each of the characters struggle with parents, perfection, puberty and popularity.  There are songs that will make you laugh, like "Magic Foot" and others that will make you think about perfection, lke "I speak Six Languages."  You will find yourself humming for days the special  "Good Bye" song as contestants are eliminated, and the beautiful "I Love You song" really showcase the talented vocal students at WNHS.

Come see how we have transformed the cafetorium to the Putnam Valley Middle School Gymnasium and how we take a look back at what it was like to be twelve. More than thirty WNHS students have been involved on stage and behind the scenes in this contemporary and hilarious musical.
