Long Beach - The Lady Mustangs faced a road challenge in the 5A playoffs with a 2nd round matchup against Long Beach. The Lady Bearcats defeated Pascagoula 2-0 in their opener.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first twenty minutes. Junior keeper Abby Baravik eliminated two potential breakthroughs by coming off her line and collapse diving to cover each one.
While West Jones held the majority of possession, neither team could convert until late in the first half.
The game’s first score came in the 39th minute. 7th grade forward Briana Carr’s crossing attempt drew a handball violation a few yards outside of the penalty area.
Senior Beth Coleman sent a driven free kick just over the Bearcat keeper and into the far corner of the goal.
“Beth’s goal was outstanding,” said Coach Winship. “It was the boost that we needed as we went into halftime.”
The Lady Mustangs kept pressure on the Bearcat keeper throughout the second half, but junior Savannah Necaise came up with a several big saves.
On the defensive end, senior Mia Bridges and junior Abbey Graham anchored the Lady Mustangs and limited the Bearcats to several long shots. Baravik collected each of those and restarted the offense.
The last big push by Long Beach occurred in the 74th minute. A West Jones foul gave the home team a free kick from about 40 yards out. Sophomore Katelyn Carver sent the ball into the penalty area. Baravik made a two fisted punch then sent the ball out of play to end the danger.
“Abby played her best game of the season today,” added Winship. “We have faith that she will be ready whenever we need a big save. Today, she shined.”
West Jones will host South Jones on Tuesday for the 5A South State championship. The match will kickoff at 6:30.
