Soso - The Lady Mustangs opened the 5A playoffs with a 1st round matchup with district 6 runner up Brookhaven.
It took the Lady Mustangs just six minutes to find the net. Senior Beth Coleman sent corner kick into the six where junior Carly Mauldin blasted a header through the defense.
Three minutes later, freshman Meredith Follis sent a long pass through the center backs. Senior Payton Roney met the pass and scored her first goal of the match.
Two minutes later, Coleman scored one of the best goals of the season. Mauldin laid off a pass around 33 yards out. Coleman lined a volley into the net extending the lead.
Freshman Julia Berry scored her first of the match in the 14th minute off a pass from Coleman. Another Coleman corner kick was headed in by Roney putting the game out of reach.
The final goal of the half came from Berry off a brilliant pass from Mauldin. Junior keeper Abby Baravik faced no shots in the half.
Roney scored the only second half goal in the 43rd minute. 8th grade Allie James drove a ball towards the end line and pushed a crossing pass along the six yard line that Roney redirected into the goal. 8th grade keeper Cassie Winship saved three Brook-haven shots late in the game.
“The girls came out focused and everybody played well,” said Coach Winship. “We have been very focused, and the players are working great together. It was nice to see everyone able to contribute tonight.“
The backline led by junior Abbey Graham and senior Mia Bridges allowed no real threats to the Mustang goal. The team received outstanding wing play from sophomore Kayla Jefcoat and freshman Maddie McLeod tonight.
Next up for the Lady Mustangs is a 2nd round trip to Long Beach on Saturday for a 1:30 kick off.
