Soso—The Mustangs had not been mathematically assured of a playoff spot entering the season finale vs South Jones. On Senior Night 2014, the Mustangs took control of their destiny and eliminated the Braves by a 2-1 score.

Senior forward Austin Herrington scored the game’s first goal in the 14th minute. Senior midfielder Omar Garcia touched a ball into the heart of the Braves defense and took the shot. The keeper dove to his left as the ball struck the post. It rebounded perfectly back to Herrington who calmly tapped it into the right corner.

Eight minutes into the second half, a handball in the box gave the Braves a penalty kick.  They converted the kick to tie the score 1-1.

“On a night like this one that was so cold, overtime was not what we all hoped for,” said Coach Winship.

A last second hand ball by a SJ fullback set the stage for junior forward Kyle Estess’ heroics.

As Estess lined up for the kick, senior Chase Brown and Garcia lined up between the ball and the SJ wall. Herrington joined the SJ wall as a distraction. As Estess strode in, Brown and Garcia sprinted away. Estess bent the ball around the wall and the keeper giving West the 2-1 win on the final play of the game.
