Soso - The Lady Mustangs battled the South Jones Lady Braves in the district 5-5A finale in front of the largest crowd of the year so far. It was Senior Night at West and there was a great spirit at the field.
Both teams attempted to force their own tempo in the game, and it was the Lady Braves who struck first. In the 26th minute of play, SJ junior midfielder Mary Kate Smith converted on her first attempt on frame. The Lady Braves would hold a 1-0 lead at the half.
“We had some major adjustments to make at the half,” said Coach Winship. “South came out ready to play tonight. Our girls never gave up, and our competitiveness came through in the end.”
The Mustangs drew level in the 68th minute. Senior midfielder Beth Coleman took the corner kick and junior midfielder Carly Mauldin redirected a header into the SJ goal.
Coleman set up the game winner in the 75th minute. After receiving a pass from Mauldin, she sent a ball through the heart of the defense. Freshman forward Meredith Follis cut right into the path of the ball, touched it away from the defender and slotted it past the SJ keeper.
In the final minute, Coleman was fouled hard from behind while she was inside the penalty area. She stepped up and nailed the penalty kick giving WJ the 3-1 win.
Junior keeper Abby Baravik saved 3 of 4 SJ shots to get her 16th win. This one gave the Mustangs their 9th straight division title.
“I’m very proud of the girls tonight,” added Winship. “We executed our corner kicks well and stayed true to our training. As a coach, there is not much more I could have asked of them.”
Next up for the Lady Mustangs is the home playoff opener on Monday against Division 6 foe Brookhaven.
