Girls clinch playoffs with win over Wayne Co

Waynesboro - The Lady Mustangs clinched a playoff berth with the 10-0 win over the War Eagles in a match that was rained out at Mustang Field.

Senior forward Beth Coleman opened the scoring with her 19th goal of the season. She was assisted by fellow senior Payton Roney.

Freshman Julia Berry set up the second goal with a solid pass to Roney for her first of the night. Roney and Coleman combined for the next two goals, and by the 8 minute mark, West led 4-0.

In the 10th minute, Berry scored , assisted by junior midfielder Carly Mauldin.  Roney scored her third of the match just a few minutes later then played in the back for the rest of the match. Coleman hit her third of the night on a penalty kick.

At 29:50 Mauldin scored for West. Six minutes later, freshman forward Emily McLaurin scored, assisted by freshman back Maddie McLeod.

The last Mustang goal came at 39:55 by freshman midfielder Brianna Read, assisted by freshman midfielder Taryn Pitts.

Junior keeper Abby Baravik and 8th grade keeper Cassie Winship were required to make no saves in the shutout.

“The girls came out intent on putting up a shutout and securing a playoff spot,” said Coach Winship. “We are moving in the right direction, and I am proud of how we shared the ball tonight.”

Next up for the Mustangs is a date at Laurel High School.
