Clinton scores last second goal to beat WJ 2-1
January 1, 2014West Jones Jr Sr High School
Shiloh Park, Brandon—The #5 Lady Mustangs faced off with the #9 Clinton Arrows in the opener of The Show. The game proved to be a very high quality match up of two of the state’s best teams.
The Lady Mustangs opened the scoring in the 9th minute of play. After an Arrow fouls, senior midfielder Beth Coleman drove a free kick from about 35 yards away over the outstretched reach of the Clinton keeper.
“It was a fantastic shot,” said Coach Winship. “The offense was moving the ball well early, and Beth saw the opportunity off the free kick.”
The majority of the rest of the half was played in the middle third of the field.
Junior keeper Abby Baravik had four first half saves while the defense forced the Arrow offense to long shots. Senior fullback Mia Bridges sparked the backline by erasing several attempted through balls with her speed. Junior back Abbey Graham maintained the balance of the line and sent balls back through Coleman and junior midfielder Carly Mauldin.
Clinton finally broke through in the 25th minute when forward Taylor Maddox cut inside and finished a shot to tie the score 1-1.
The final minute of the match was hectic. Coleman sent another long free kick on goal. Mauldin, senior forward Payton Roney and freshman forward Meredith Follis each raced toward the keeper. She bobbled the ball backwards before catching it. The referee conferred with his linesman and ruled that the ball did not cross the line.
After the Clinton punt, senior forward Hayden Oswalt was fouled with just seconds left. She set the ball and sent a shot toward goal. The ball found its way through the pack in front of Baravik, and Clinton had won the game on the final play.
“The girls had their heads up after the match,” added Winship. “It could have gone either way. That showed a lot of character.”
