Lady Mustangs shut out South Jones

Ellisville—The Lady Mustangs faced their toughest test of the district schedule with a trip to The Reservation to take on the undefeated Lady Braves.
The first half was played largely in the center third of the field with West Jones attacking more than the Lady Braves.
“We expected South to come out very aggressive on the defensive end and to look for chances to counter attack us with Mary Kate (Smith),” said Coach Winship.
Late in the first half, freshman forward Meredith Follis played a one-touch pass behind the Braves’ defense. Senior forward Payton Roney had the breakaway, but was fouled from behind inside the penalty area. After a red card was issued, the first penalty shot was saved by SJ keeper Savannah Bynum. A violation gave the Mustangs a redo, but attempt sailed over the bar keeping the score tied.
Playing with a man advantage, junior midfielder Carly Mauldin scored her first goal in the 46th minute off a crossing pass from senior midfielder Beth Coleman.
In the 49th minute, Carly Mauldin brought down a Bynum punt and sent it back on frame for her second goal.
Ten minutes later, Mauldin put the game entirely out of reach with her third goal. Follis laid another one-touch pass back towards the arc where Mauldin was moving. She chipped the ball just over the reach of the SJ keeper and into the back of the net.
West Jones’ keeper Abby Baravik had 2 saves of SJ's 4 shots. SJ's keeper Savannah Bynum had 12 saves of WJ's 28 shots.
“Our defense has come along better than I expected,” added Winship. “Our body shape on the field lets us keep possession in the back. I love the way that we use Abby in our offense. It has been wonderful to watch our girls attack as a group. The scoring has been balanced and that has helped us tremendously.”
