January 1, 2014West Jones Jr Sr High School
Ellisville—The Mustangs faced a must win situation to remain in the hunt for the district crown when they faced the Braves on The Reservation.
The Mustang offense quickly set the speed of the game with some of their best passing of the year. The game was played quickly through the backs and midfielders.
Senior forward Austin Herrington scored the game winning goal in the 15th minute of play. Junior midfielder Kyle Estess crossed a ball through the penalty mark to sophomore midfielder Matthew Wade. He sent a perfect pass through the defense that Herrington flicked in.
In the 25th minute, the Mustangs extended their lead when senior forward Chase Brown stole a goal kick and blasted it into the lower left corner. The 2-0 lead would stand at the half.
In the 45th minute, Estess would take a free kick from about 35 yards out. The ball was sent out of the 18 yard box by the Braves defense. Estess raced over to receive the ball, took a touch to his left foot, and hammered the ball into the lower right corner.
The final goal of the night was Brown’s second. In the 70th minute, Estess sent a driven ball from the West Jones side of midfield to a sprinting freshman forward Alek Harper. The SJ goal keeper made a sliding attempt at the top of the 18. Harper and the keeper slammed together, but the ball ricocheted off Harper’s shin guard toward the goal post. Brown never stopped running and tapped the ball back into the middle of the empty net.
Senior keeper Jacob Hauenstein had 11 saves of SJ's 19 shots. SJ's keeper had 8 saves of WJ's 23 shots.
The Mustangs, 4-7-1 and 2-1 in district play, now sit second in district behind Laurel after the first round of play.
