Mustangs drop district match 1-0 to Laurel
January 1, 2014West Jones Jr Sr High School
Soso—The Mustangs hosted a division match with the top early seed in boys 5-5A on the line. Both teams shutout out district opponents their openers.
The game started off as a defensive struggle with both teams trying to control the pace of the match.
“We were not able to string together more than a few passes,” said Coach Winship. “We kept going back to attempting to play most everything long and over the top. Laurel did basically the same thing.”
Early in the match, the ball switched ends quite a bit. Laurel had the better opportunities to score, but either senior keeper Jacob Hauenstein made the save or the Tornado shots went wide.
On offense, the Mustangs best first half opportunity came off a Hauenstein punt to senior forward Chase Brown.
Brown headed the ball to himself on a dead sprint, but his shot sailed wide of the goal for a Laurel goal kick. At the half, the score was at 0-0.
At the 57:12 mark, Laurel senior forward Saul Lopez scored the only goal of the match. A Tornado played a long ball into the left corner. Lopez chased it down, made a cut back into the middle and fired a shot into the far post netting.
From that point, the Tornadoes dropped back an extra man and played nothing but defense. The West Jones attacked was much better after the half, but the Mustangs could not find a gap in the defense.
Laurel keeper Crawford Boyd had 13 saves of WJ's 14 shots. Many of those came in the game’s final minutes.
Hauenstein had 10 saves of Laurel’s 13 shots. Laurel is 6-3-1, 2-0 in 5-5A and West Jones is now 3-7-2, 1-1 in 5-5A.
