Lady Mustangs open district with big win

Waynesboro—The Lady Mustangs opened division play on the turf at Wayne County.
Freshman midfielder Shelby McMinn scored the game winner in the second minute off a corner kick from senior midfielder Beth Coleman. In the 5th minute, junior midfielder Carly Mauldin set up Coleman’s first goal of the game.
One minute later, senior forward Payton Roney stole a goal kick and made the score 3-0. Freshman forward Julia Berry assisted Roney a minute later. Seven minutes into the match, West led 4-0.
Coleman played a great ball into space and Mauldin finished it for her first goal of the match in the 12th minute.
Berry scored a goal of her own in the 14th minute. Three minutes later, Coleman assisted 8th grade forward Allie James. Mauldin scored the last goal of the half in the 23rd minute off a brilliant pass from freshman fullback Faith Gavin giving West an 8-0 halftime lead.
Junior fullback Abbey Graham had the first of her two second half goals just 50 seconds after the half. 8th grade forward Anna Grace Gieger assisted that one then scored her own off a pass from James. Freshman midfielder Taryn Pitts scored from about 30 yards away for her first goal of the year.
Berry added her second goal of the match off a great pass from freshman forward Emily McLaurin. In the 56th minute, Coleman sent a corner kick into the six yard box where freshman midfielder Brianna Read was waiting. She knocked it in for her first goal of the year. 8th grade forward Macayla Johnson scored the next goal followed by another by McMinn.
Senior fullback Mia Bridges scored her first of the season. 8th grade keeper Cassie Winship set up the final goal of the night when she tapped a ball to Graham just before colliding with the WC keeper.
