Lady Mustangs shutout NEJ
December 24, 2013West Jones Jr Sr High School
Laurel. The Lady Mustangs traveled across the county to take on the Northeast Jones Tigers in a matchup of non district rivals.
The Mustangs controlled the pace and tempo of the match from the beginning. NEJ senior keeper Chandler Pickering made numerous early saves.
“This was a match that tested our offensive patience,” said Coach Winship. “We settled in well and possessed the ball. We never stopped attacking the NEJ end, but we were facing a very defensive formation from Coach Reid’s squad.”
NEJ dropped a deep sweeper to go along with a full backline which hampered the Mustangs in the final third of the field.
The patience paid off in the 36th minute when junior center back Abbey Graham received a long clearing pass and recycled it through freshman center forward Meredith Follis. She played a ball wide to senior midfielder Beth Coleman who made two cuts and sent a line drive past Pickering into the far side netting. “It was critical that we take a lead into the half,” said Winship.
The lead increased ten minutes into the second half when Follis received a pass and laid it off to junior midfielder Carly Mauldin.
Mauldin bent a ball through a pack of players and into the far right corner of the goal for the second score.
The defense led by Graham, seniors Mia Bridges and Jordan Holifield, freshmen Maddie McLeod, Shelby McMinn and Faith Gavin, sophomore Kayla Jefcoat and junior keeper Abby Baravik limited the Tigers to three long shots in the match.
“I’m very proud of the focus our team has shown,” added Coach Winship. “The girls train hard and play hard night after night.”
