Mustangs sweep West Harrison out of playoffs

Mustang Field—Junior fullback Austin Herrington moved to sweeper, and it paid huge dividends for the Mustangs.
“Our match at East Central gave us the opportunity to try some formations,” said Coach Craig Winship. “I thought our defense stepped up tonight and played their best all year.”
Senior midfielder Evan Buckley would score the first Mustang goal. Junior fullback Omar Garcia crossed a ball through the mark that was tapped to Buckley by sophomore midfielder Donaldo Martinez.
In the 23rd minute, Buckley won a tackle and sent a long ball to sophomore forward Kyle Estess. The keeper came out and Estess tapped it behind him for the second goal.
The defense led by junior keeper Jacob Hauenstein did the rest. “Jacob played a solid, fundamental game in goal. It was easily his best performance of the year,” added Coach Winhip. “Garcia, Herrington, Dylan Blackburn, Erik Buckley, Chance Clark, Alek Harper and Will Harrelson played outstanding on defense tonight, Landon Bullock and Jean Carlos Rivera played lockdown man marking late in the game.”
The Mustangs advance to the second round after being bumped out last year by West Harrison. West will play Pascagoula while Pearl vs Stone County is the other South State semifinal match. The winners of those two games will face off next Tuesday with a trip to the finals on the line.
