Gulfport—The Lady Mustangs opened the 2013 portion of their season with a match against 4A Bay High.
Senior midfielder Somer Anderson scored the first goal of the match by heading a free kick by junior forward Beth Coleman. Anderson tracked the ball that was struck from the midfield stripe and redirected it over the keeper for the game winner.
Sophomore Carly Mauldin would add the second goal after taking a throw in and driving through the heart of the Tiger defense. She tapped the ball into the right corner giving West the 2-0 lead that would stand at the half.
Junior Payton Roney opened the second half with a goal of her own. Mauldin would send a ball to Coleman who quickly laid it off to Anderson. She saw Roney cutting towards the mark with her defender trailing behind her. Anderson played a great pass into Roney’s path which she shot into the lower left corner of the Tiger goal.
Senior Kelsey Quarles scored the final goal of the match. Roney tracked a ball down in the left corner and played a cross to the front running Julia Berry. The 8th grade forward played the ball back to the trash runner Mauldin. Her left-footed ball was played perfectly to the back running Quarles. She hammered the shot near post past a diving keeper for her first goal of her senior season.
“Payton’s goal and Kelsey’s were two of the best goal’s our team has scored so far,” said Coach Winship. “Each one was the product of the entire offense effectively being in the area where the run of play sent them. Both were very fun to watch and a direct result on what we train to be able to do.”
