Lady Mustangs sweep District 5 with win over South

Mustang Field—The atmosphere was electric as the top two teams in District 5-5A squared off in the finale of the first round of division play.
Junior midfielder Hunter Eady opened up the scoring in the 8th minute of play when she sent a driven shot from about 35 yards out towards the South Jones goal. The ball made it behind the Lady Braves keeper and snuck into the near post corner.
In the 20th minute, senior midfielder Taylor Herring sent a high arcing ball neatly into the far corner.
After a South Jones red card reduced the number of players to 10, the Lady Braves defense would stiffen to prevent anymore offensive opportunities for the home team.
“We knew that they would have to change their game plan being down two goals and down a player at the half,” said Coach Winship. “We knew they would have to send at least one mark up to offense and that would give us more space to work with on offense.”
The space was there and the Lady Mustangs jumped on it quickly. Five minutes into the second half, junior forward Beth Coleman sent a free direct kick from the midfield stripe into the Braves box. The keeper saved it, but senior fullback Somer Anderson sent the rebound into the open goal. Two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Carly Mauldin played a long through ball to Coleman who beat the keeper at the near post for the 4-0 lead. The Braves’ Dallas Cooley scored on a penalty kick cutting the lead to 4-1.
In the 54th minute, Mauldin played a pass to 8th grade midfielder Meredith Follis. She in turn found junior forward Payton Roney cutting in front of the centerback. Roney converted for the 5-1 lead.
In the 72nd minute, 7th grade midfielder Anna Grace Gieger played give-and-go with Coleman and wound up with her first goal of the season. A late corner kick goal from Eady to 7th grade forward Allie James would be the final score of the match.
“We expected a rough, physical game with a top-notch team. That’s what we got. I was very proud of the determination that my girls showed tonight. It was definitely a statement win over a quality team,” said Coach Winship.
