The Mustang defense was the star of the match tonight as the group of juniors Dylan Blackburn, Landon Bullock, Austin Herrington, senior Chance Clark and sophomore Erik Buckley allowed only two shots on junior keeper Jacob Hauenstein. Clark would score the game winning goal off a corner kick by sophomore Donaldo Martinez. Clark took a deflected ball and passed it through the mix of Wildcats and Mustangs into the back corner of the goal. Senior Evan Buckley scored just minutes later off a series of passes by sophomore Kyle Estess and Martinez. Stone County scored a goal off a ball that almost went out of bounds down the right flank. The ball was crossed in and tapped home. The Mustangs quickly responded with a strike by Blake Anderson. Buckley found the sophomore forward in space by the Wildcat sweeper. Anderson took the pass and put the ball off the crossbar and into the net. Buckley would end the scoring off a pass from 8th grade midfielder/fullback Alek Harper. His laser shot hit the back net before the Wildcat keeper count react giving West the final score of 4-1. “The boys played great tonight,” said Mustang Coach Craig Winship. “The guys are getting comfortable in their roles and it is starting to show. Our defense used their speed to eliminate most of Stone County’s offense, and Evan anchored our attack. All in all I was very pleased with a road victory down here especially since they were tied with us atop the district standings.”
