Lady Mustangs crush Wayne County 11-0
December 19, 2012West Jones Jr Sr High School
Waynesboro—The Lady Mustangs looked to open District 5-5A with a bang against Wayne County. The game was originally scheduled for Mustang Field but drenching rains forced the game to be moved to the turf fields at Wayne County High School.
In the third minute, junior forward Beth Coleman played a short corner to fellow junior Payton Roney. She blasted the ball into the upper right corner for the first goal.
Three minutes late, sophomore midfielder Carly Mauldin sent a ball wide left. Senior midfielder Taylor Herring chased the ball down and sent a crossing pass back through the mark. Coleman was cutting at the right time and finished the shot for the 2-0 lead.
In the twelfth minute, Mauldin found the feet of Roney for the third Mustang goal. Four minutes later, 8th grade midfielder Meredith Follis sent a perfect pass though the mark for Herring’s first goal of the night.
Coleman would add her second goal off her own re-bound in the 22nd minute and found Mauldin in the 27th minute for Carly’s first goal of the game.
Early in the second half, 8th grade forward Julia Berry scored off a corner kick from Coleman.
Junior fullback Jordan Holifield struck a bending shot over the wall and into the right corner off a free direct kick in the 51st minute.
Roney would add her third goal of the match off Coleman’s fourth assist of the match.
7th grade forward Allie James played a ball back through the mark to a cutting Mauldin for her second goal of the match.
Herring would finish out the scoring by stealing a goal kick and driving a shot over the Wayne County keeper. Sophomore Abby Baravik and 8th grader Taryn Pitts shared time in goal for the no-save shutout.
"It was great of Wayne County to host us on such short notice," said Coach Winship. "The girls played as a unit tonight with little visible drop off in our system of play throughout the big win. Nights like tonight can lead into selfish play, but I am very glad to see that we shared the ball regardless of who was in the game. It says a lot of the character of the girls."
