Lady Mustangs shutout Oxford

Shiloh Park, Brandon - The Lady Mustangs had the early 8:00 AM match against North State finalists Oxford. The girls came out possessing well and controlled the pace of the match.

   Early in the first half, junior forward Beth Coleman took a corner kick. It fell perfectly into the mix of attackers, but was tapped back towards the arc. Sophomore Carly Mauldin pounced on the redirected ball and sent into through the mass of players into the lower right corner.

   In the second half, it would be Coleman again with a drive towards goal. Her shot was saved by the Oxford keeper, but pushed into the path of sophomore midfielder Abbey Graham. She slammed the ball into the net giving West Jones a 2-0 lead.

   The defense led by senior Somer Anderson, juniors Jordan Holifield and Mia Bridges and sophomore keeper Abby Baravik stayed strong throughout the match. Baravik only faced three shots in the shutout win.

   “The girls executed the game plan beautifully this morning,” said Coach Winship. “We are becoming a very good finishing team on corner kicks, and the defense plays balls amongst themselves well. It helps when all 11 players trust the others.”
