Calhoun Field – The Lady Mustangs opened up the 2012-13 high school soccer season with a jamboree match against Laurel High School. The Lady Mustangs defeated Laurel 11-0. Sophomore midfielder Carly Mauldin had the game winner in the 5th minute when junior forward Payton Roney found her cutting towards goal.
The second Mustang goal in the 7th minute began with Roney playing a ball wide to senior midfielder Taylor Herring. She found a junior forward Beth Coleman heading for goal. Coleman laid off the ball for Roney’s goal.
After junior fullback Mia Bridges stole an errant Tornado pass, she played a long driving pass to the feet of Roney who found Coleman for her first goal of the day putting the Lady Mustangs up 3-0. In the 13th minute, 8th grade midfielder Faith Gavin sent a ball wide to senior midfielder Kelsey Quarles. She played a ball towards the mark where 7th grade forward Allie James tapped it under the keeper for her first goal of the day.
In the 16th minute of play, Mauldin played a ball into space on the right flank to 7th grade midfielder Anna Grace Gieger. She had a driving shot from 20 yards out that just sailed over the keeper’s reach and into the goal.
8th grade forward Julia Berry scored her first goal off another assist from Gavin. Gieger would score another first half goal off a great lay off pass from Berry in the 26th minute.
8th grade midfielder Meredith Follis spotted Roney curling through the arc. Roney converted the pass into an upper 90 shot for her second goal. Later, Roney would take a corner kick that sailed to the back cutter, junior midfielder Hunter Eady for her first goal of the day.
Berry added another when she and fellow forward James combined in front of the Tornado goal. Soph midfielder Abbey Graham converted a penalty kick in the last minute.
Sophomore Abby Baravik, freshman Lenzi Roney and 8th grader Taryn Pitts all shared time in goal.
