Report on 2011 So Cal End of Summer Showcase

The eighth annual Southern California End of Summer Showcase was held Saturday August 13th at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. Thirty teams participated. Here is a report on the event.

 

Top Prospects (*indicates highest consideration for this category)

6’5” SG/SF 2012 Ronnell Abaekobe of King Drew HS (Independent #4)

-Skilled wing who handles and passes it well. Can attack and finish with either hand and is a solid shooter to 3. Has some burst of speed. Shot selection is a little shaky.

5’9” PG 2014 Tyrese Aragon of Etiwanda HS (Underclassmen)

Athletic point guard, nice burst of speed. Fairly good ball handler and passer, nice first step, moves well without the ball, can rebound. Good-looking prospect!

6’2” SG 2012 Dreon Barlett of Huntington Beach Edison HS (California Rebels)

-Very athletic wing who can really attack the basket. Finishes very well and is a capable shooter. Really defends the ball. Sleeper.

6’0” PG 2012 Marcus Booker of Mt. Miguel HS (San Diego Wardoggs)

-Point guard with very good skills. Passes and creates very well. Has quickness and burst and is good in transition (pulls up well), capable shooter.

6’0” PG/SG 2012 Justin Childress of Loyola HS (California Rebels)

-Smart point guard who can handle it and pass it very well. Capable shooter to 3 with a nice pull up. Uses body well to finish, solid defender.

*6’2” SG 2012 Jordan Grace of Rancho Verde HS (Independent #4)

-Very athletic driver who finishes real well in transition. Is a capable shooter to 3, good driver and plays hard. One of the standout players in the event.

6’2” PG 2013 Brynton Lamar of St. Augustine (San Diego All-Stars Pump n Run 17U)

-Very long point guard, uses length to bother players. Finds teammates and excels in transition. Solid mid range jumper.

6’4” SF 2013 Michael Milligan of Crespi HS (Independent #3)

Fairly athletic wing who can run. Solid handler, drives fairly well, real good rebounder.

*6’6” SF/PF 2012 Donald Muepo Jr. of Dorsey HS (Independent #4)

-Big, strong, and athletic. Can post up and is good over the left shoulder with nice overall touch. Can face up as well and is a capable mid range jump shooter. Solid rebounder.

6’3” SF/PG 2012 Keywhon Powns of Westchester HS (ING Hoops)

-Athletic wing that can score the ball at a high level. Good ball handler and passer, has good footwork on the perimeter. Competes hard as well.

6’7” SF/PF 2012 Brandon Rosser of Temecula Valley HS (Icemen)

Fairly athletic wing with long arms. Decent handler, ok passer, can defend. Moves ok without the ball, pulls up well half court. Needs some bulk/strength. Nice upside.

6’4” SG/SF 2012 Chris Sterling of Delano HS (BFC Varsity)

-Very athletic wing, can really attack the rim, and can score in multiple ways in the half court. Good mid range jumper, pulls up well half court. Sleeper.

6’3” SG/SF Aamahd Walker of Culver City HS (California Rebels)

-Athletic wing who is as good attacking in the half court as he is in transition. Finishes well and above the rim and is a good shooter off the bounce out to 3.

-Very athletic and active two guard. Good driver, nice rebounder.

6’2” PG/SG 2012 Coley Apsay of Canyon HS (SCV Lightning)

-Solid combo guard who runs the team. Handles it, pushes the break, moves well without the ball, does compete.

6’7” PF 2012 Jonathan Benson of Gahr HS (California Rebels)

-Long and active athlete. Attacks the glass as well as the rim. OK driver.

*6’6” SF 2012 Rohjohn Brett of Silverado HS (Team INergy)

-Very athletic wing who attacks the offensive glass and finishes above the rim. Strong driver, decent shooter. Needs to add strength/bulk.

6’2” PG 2013 George Buaku of El Toro HS (Basketball Realm 15U/17U)

-Nice ball handler and passer. Good mid range jumper and capable out to 3.

6’5” SG 2015 Tyler Burch of Ocean View HS (All City 14U)

-Solid ball handler, is ok in transition. Long and is fairly skilled. Ok pull-up, good shooter to 3.

 

6’3” SG 2015 Shane Cavanaugh of Mater Dei HS (All City 14U)

-Capable ball handler and passer, runs the floor hard, ok shooter, solid rebounder.

6’0” PG 2012 Jerred Cook of Serra HS (Independent #2)

-Athletic one man, runs real well. Handles fairly well, good passer, does see the floor, makes plays in transition.

6’4” SG 2012 Jonny Crosthwaite of Northgate HS (Independent #1)

-Competitive wing, moves real well without the ball, solid handler, good shooter.

5’10” PG 2012 Corey Dean Jr. of Washington Prep (ING Hoops)

-Quick penetrator, and very good ball handler who can get in the lane. Knows how to run a team.

5’8” PG 2013 Mark Eden of Don Lugo HS (Chino Hills Bruins)

-Fairly athletic one man, good handler and passer, does see the floor. Effective penetrator who has a nice first step.

5’6” PG 2012 Troy Fontanilla of Renaissance Academy (Blazers)

-Heady point guard, handles and passes well, effective penetrator, runs a team well.

*6’1” PG/SG 2012 Kaelin Horton of Culver City HS (Independent #3)

-Combo guard with real good speed. Handles it, pushes the break, pulls up fairly well half court, good driver.

*5’11” PG 2012 Justin Lea of Central HS (Independent #3)

-Quick and strong one man, has burst of speed. Is physical and gets into the lane well and can finish.

*5’10” PG 2014 Austin Lee of Brentwood HS (BFT 15U)

-Handles it well, solid driver who has a nice pull up jumper. Capable shooter to 3, has hesitation move.

6’4” SG/SF 2012 Dylan Martin of Chaparral HS (Icemen)

-Capable handler, good passer, ok shooter with 3-point range.

*5’9” PG 2015 Tommy McCarthy of Torrey Pines HS (San Diego All-Stars 14U Gold)

-Smart point guard who makes sound decisions. Solid shooter and passer, good ball handler.

*6’0” PG 2016 Justin Moore of Middle School (San Diego All-Stars 14U Gold)

-Sees the floor and is a nice passer. Has good burst and uses the hesitation quite well, ok shooter. Excellent prospect.

*6’1” SG 2012 Willie Owens of Nuview Bridge HS (West Coast Warriors)

-Runs well, capable handler, can pull up half court. Moves well without the ball, has a nice first step, can defend.

*5’10” PG 2015 Kahlil Simplis of Campbell Hall HS (BFT 15U)

-Capable driver with a strong build. Good passer with nice court vision. Capable shooter to 3. Makes smart plays.

*6’2” PG/SG 2012 Marciano Rogers of Ontario HS (Underclassmen)

-Good athlete with long arms. Nice driver, solid ball handler, can go both ways, finishes in transition. OK first step, has a nice floater in the lane, solid rebounder.

5’11” PG 2015 Stephen Thompson Jr. of Bishop Montgomery (Independent #2)

-Very good shooter, capable ball handler who passes well. Smart player who makes good decisions. Needs more physical strength.

5’11” SG 2014 Kalyn Thomas of Escondido HS (San Diego All Stars 15U Pump N Run)

-Athletic two guard. Can shoot it to 3-point range, finishes at the rim. Solid defender, competitor.

-Point guard with good vision, speed and quickness. Capable shooter and driver. Competes, works on defense.

-Strong and athletic combo forward who really attacks the rim. Finishes very well and has a nice mid range game, capable postup player, solid rebounder. Has upside.

-OK passer and ball handler. Good feel for the game.

-Strong-bodied four man. Solid defender and rebounder, does the dirty work. Needs more offensively, plays with hands up.

-Big man that plays hard. Has decent touch around the rim. Needs to get in better shape.

2011 Bay Area Memorial Day Classic Report

Report on Bay Area Memorial Day Classic

The first Annual Bay Area Memorial Day Classic was held Saturday to Monday May 28th – 30th at Dream Courts in Hayward, CA. Eighty-six teams from though out the west coast participated. Here is a report on the event.

 

Red Division Report

Top Prospects (* indicates highest consideration)

*Taj Adams 6’8’’ SF 2012 Fairfax HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Really good length. Can stretch the floor with his jumper. Nice mid-range game. Good body control on his drives, capable post up player.

Sammy Allen 6’0” SG 2011 Alameda HS (Oakland Bulldogs)

Effective all-around scorer. Solid handler and passer, finishes well in transition, shoots it ok with three point range, good rebounder.

Rodney Cook Jr 5’11’’ PG 2012 Jesse Bethel HS (Oakland Rebels 17U)

Good scoring point guard. Has 3 point range on his shot. Can get to the basket regularly. Good burst with the ball. Needs to get better at running the team.

Drew Dickey 6’9’’ C 2012 St. Francis HS (KWA 17)

Emerging post prospect. Gets very good position in the post. Good touch around the basket. Agile prospect who can play in open court, works hard.

Matt Ennis 6’2” SG/SF 2012 Woodside HS (Roadrunners Elite)
Good shooter with deep range, has nice crossover move. Finishes well, tough-minded.

Tanner Gidding 6’9’’ C 2012 Windsor HS (Oakland Rebels 17U)

Nice size with room to fill out. Good hands. Developing as a defensive presence inside. Needs to improve his offensive repertoire to maximize his potential.

Zack Gordon 6’8” PF 2012 Archbishop Murphy HS (Emerald City Pioneers)

Hard working, has lift, ok mid range shooter, excellent rebounder.

*Kendall Jackson 5’9’’ PG 2012 Bishop O’Dowd HS (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Electric PG in the open court. Very good ball control and vision to make the extra pass, very consistent penetrator with nice quickness. Solid defender. Can look to score more.

Justin Johnson 6’2’’ SG/SF 2012 El Cerrito HS (NorCal Supreme 17)

Physical wing who plays bigger than his size. Has a tough mid-range game on pull-up and post looks. Handles contact well on his finishes. Good positional rebounder.

Kahlil Johnson 6’7’’ PF/SF 2012 Palisades HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Physical combo forward. Rebounds well. Projects as a face up 4-man. Finishes well inside with some bounce and in transition. Good shooting stroke, solid defender and rebounder.

Steven Jones 6’1” PG/SG 2012 Taft HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Hard working combo guard. Finishes well, can shoot from the perimeter, solid defender.

*McKenzie Moore 6’7’’ W/PG 2010 College Park HS (Team 94)

Dynamic playmaker. Good first step getting to the basket. Streaky shooter. Gets his hands on high number of balls defensively. Tournament MVP.

Casey Norris 6’2’’ SG/PG 2012 Newark Memorial HS (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Starting to put it together as a scorer. He is a smooth shooter with three point range. Needs to continue to work on creating own shot, solid ball handler.

*Christopher Patterson 6’6’’ PF 2012 Muhammad University of Islam (Oakland Rebels 17U)

Emerging forward who is ready to blow up. Real good rebounder. Agile inside and can step out for mid-range shot. Can improve on his explosion.

Mitch Penner 6’5” SF 2012 Kennedy HS (Emerald City Pioneers)

Solid handler, real good passer, solid driver with a deceptive 1st step.

*Elliott Pitts 6’4” W/PG 2013 De La Salle HS (Greenline)

Very skilled competitor. Stepping it up defensively. One of the better shooters in any class in the west.

*Kewyon Powns 6’3’’ PG 2012 Westchester HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Big point guard. Pushes the ball well for early offense. Good shot maker around the floor. Plays well in team setting. Very good at breaking down defender one on one.

Enoch Rhemadji 6’3” SG 2012 Westwind Prep (Nor Cal Pharoahs 17)

Big time athlete with an excellent burst of speed. Gets to the basket almost at will. Has a knack for getting steals defensively.

Cody Shelton 6’10’’ C 2014 Irvington HS (Bay Area Rush 17 Varsity)

Thick frame. Good hands receiving the ball. Rebounds the ball well at his size. Needs to develop his post offense.

Christopher Smith 6’3’’ SG 2012 Center HS (E-Time Hoops Elite)

Emerging shooting guard prospect. Good shooter with range. Can also create offense with the dribble, pulls up well in transition. Solid defender.

Stevie Squires 6’2’’ G 2012 Westwind Prep (NorCal Pharaohs 17)

Has a really good burst to his game. Can finish at the rim. Slashing guard type. Excels in transition. Sets teammates up well.

Zach Taylor 6’0’’ PG 2013 Cedarcrest HS (Emerald City Pioneers)

Steady point guard. Can handle the ball and set up the offense consistently. Plays with good maturity level, shoots it well with 3-point range.

Amadi Udenyi 5’11” PG 2012 De La Salle HS (Greenline)

Good on-ball defender, gets to the basket on the drive consistently. Has the ability to penetrate and dish off; developing his perimeter shot.

Parker Uu 6’4’’ SG 2012 Jesuit HS (Team 94)

Sharp shooter from 3 point range. Has good rhythm on the catch and release. Shoots well over defender. Needs to showcase off the dribble game more, does compete.

*Grant Verhoeven 6’9” PF/C 2012 Central Valley Christian HS (Organized Chaos Elite)

Skilled and aggressive four man. Very complete player who brings it all the time. High major prospect.

*Britton Williams 5’10” PG 2012 Clovis West HS (Organized Chaos Elite)

Makes a ton of plays in transition. Good driver-nice first step, very adept at finding the open m an, ambidextrous handler.

*Christian Wood 6’8’’ SF 2013 Pete Knight HS (Southern California All-Stars Red)

Best prospect at the event. Great length and versatility as a 3/4 forward. Can handle the ball and finish consistently with bounce. Nice shooting range, can rebound and block shots. Definite rising star.

Dion Wright 6’6” SF 2012 Mayfair HS (So Cal All Stars Red)

Athletic wing, creates his own shot. Finishes and also has a mid range game. Decent shooter with three point range.

Good size and build. Distributes the ball well. Can create offense off the dribble. Makes plays in transition.

Glenn Baral 6’4’’ SG 2012 St. Mary’s HS (Team 94)

Nice shooting stroke. Can be streaky from time to time. Incorporates dribble well into his game. Sound defender.

Ivo Basor 6’7” C 2012 Watsonville HS (Team Santa Cruz)

Hard-working postman who is still learning the game. Nice shooting touch, a little mechanical. Has some upside.

Jaskarn Bawja 6’1” SG 2014 Irvington HS (Bay Area Rush 17)

Good shooter from the perimeter, solid defender.

Gabriel Bealer 6’5’’ F 2013 Antelope HS (E-Time Hoops Elite)

Raw forward prospect with upside. Can step out on the floor with his jumper. Good one to follow.

Jordan Belton 6’0” PG 2012 San Benito HS (West Valley)

Dynamic point guard. Nice all around scorer who is shard to guard.

Nate Benjamin 6’6” PF/C 2012 Analy HS (Nor Cal Supreme 17)

Athletic combo post, has some upside. Rebounds aggressively, developing his offensive.

Conor Clifford 6’10’’ C 2012 Ocean View HS (Southern California All-Stars Red)

Big-bodied five man. Good activity inside, uses left hand well. Rebounds well with good ball position. Can improve conditioning and agility.

Luke Cochran 7’0’’ C 2011 Del Oro HS (Cal Elite)

Moves well for a seven footer. Can add more strength. Possesses a good frame to add the bulk. Solid rebounder.

Joshua Crum 5’11’’ G 2012 Bishop O’Dowd HS (Lakeshow 17s White)

Smooth guard with good versatility. Nice shooter from outside. Can also create going to basket. Not great at either. Attacks passing lanes well on defense.

TJ Daniel 6’7’’ PF 2012 Bishop O’Dowd HS (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Thick forward with good strength. Rebounds well against size. Has good hands. Needs to expand offensive game.

Paris Davis 6’3” SG 2012 Skyline HS (Oakland Rebels 17 U)

Nice all-around scorer, solid ball handler, can defend.

Athletic wing, long arms. Pulls up well half court, good rebounder.

Combo guard, solid handler and real good passer. Capable in transition, ok driver, solid rebounder.

Walker Hansen 6’1” PG/SG 2012 Santa Cruz HS (Team Santa Cruz)

Smart and competitive. Can handle, pass and shoot.

AJ Hedgecock 6’2” PG 2012 Dayton HS (Team Jones)

Hard-working competitor, really pushes the break, solid rebounder, can post up some. Maxes out.

Mac Hoffman 6’6’’ PF 2013 De La Salle HS (Greenline)

Can run the floor. Solid defender. Will be an impact frontline player as he fills out.

Devin Hunter 6’0” PG 2012 Sacramento HS (Cal Elite)

Great floor leader who can run a team. Handles it well, ok driver.

Khalil James 5’8” PG 2013 Sacred Heart Cathedral HS (Roadrunners Elite)

Good quickness, nice on-ball defender, can shoot it from 3-range.

Athletic wing, nice defender, can shoot it some.

Good shooting stroke. Standstill threat. Can handle the ball. Needs to develop PG skills due to size, solid rebounder. Good competitor.

*KJ Logue 6’5’’ SF 2012 Bella Vista HS (Nor Cal Pump N Run 17U)

Solid athlete. Can play in the open floor with or without the ball. Rebounds well. Is at best slashing to the basket, shoots it well with three point range. Under the radar player primed for nice summer.

Devereaux Manley 6’5’’ W 2011 Castlemont HS (Team 94)

Well built wing player. Rebounds ball well on both ends. Solid mid-range game. Unselfish player. Nice first step.

Logan Mitchell 6’4’’ PF 2011 Dixon HS (Davis Wildcats Black)

Very good competitor. Passes well from post position. Nimble undersize 4-man. Rebounds well with strong hands. Works really hard.

Davion Mize 6’0’’ SG 2012 Salesian HS (NorCal Supreme 17)

Solid handler and passer, makes plays in transition, good rebounder.

Tim Mohr 6’2” SG 2012 Davis HS (Davis Wildcats Black)

Solid ball handler and passer, good shooter, deceptive 1st step.

Kairon Moore 6’5’’ SF/PF 2011 Pinole Valley HS (Oakland Bulldogs)

Physical combo forward. Finishes well off his dribble. Has some explosion. Good build.

*LJ Moore 6’3” PG 2013 Central HS (Organized Chaos Elite)

Athletic one man, runs extremely well. Effective in transition, has nice hesitation move.

*Maika Ostling 6’10” C 2012 Dayton HS (Team Jones)

Big-bodied five man, has some lift. Can step out and shoot the three, Solid rebounder. Committed to Oregon State.

*Bryce Pressley 6’4’’ SF 2012 Jesuit HS (Nor Cal Pharaohs 17)

Solid handler, pulls up fairly well half court. Good looking shooter with range to three

*Trevor Priest 6’5’’ W 2012 Santa Teresa HS (West Valley)

Versatile player. Can shoot with three point range and handle the ball in traffic. Can get more athletic.

*James Reid 6’2” PG/SG 2012 Mountain View HS (Team Jones)

Skilled one-man who can play two. Really understands how to play, deep three point range, poised ball hand
