Report on 2011 So Cal End of Summer Showcase

The eighth annual Southern California End of Summer Showcase was held Saturday August 13^th at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. Thirty teams participated. Here is a report on the event.

Top Prospects (*indicates highest consideration for this category)

6’5” SG/SF 2012 Ronnell Abaekobe of King Drew HS (Independent #4)

-Skilled wing who handles and passes it well. Can attack and finish with either hand and is a solid shooter to 3. Has some burst of speed. Shot selection is a little shaky.

5’9” PG 2014 Tyrese Aragon of Etiwanda HS (Underclassmen)

Athletic point guard, nice burst of speed. Fairly good ball handler and passer, nice first step, moves well without the ball, can rebound. Good-looking prospect!

6’2” SG 2012 Dreon Barlett of Huntington Beach Edison HS (California Rebels)

-Very athletic wing who can really attack the basket. Finishes very well and is a capable shooter. Really defends the ball. Sleeper.

6’0” PG 2012 Marcus Booker of Mt. Miguel HS (San Diego Wardoggs)

-Point guard with very good skills. Passes and creates very well. Has quickness and burst and is good in transition (pulls up well), capable shooter.

6’0” PG/SG 2012 Justin Childress of Loyola HS (California Rebels)

-Smart point guard who can handle it and pass it very well. Capable shooter to 3 with a nice pull up. Uses body well to finish, solid defender.

*6’2” SG 2012 Jordan Grace of Rancho Verde HS (Independent #4)

-Very athletic driver who finishes real well in transition. Is a capable shooter to 3, good driver and plays hard. One of the standout players in the event.

6’2” PG 2013 Brynton Lamar of St. Augustine (San Diego All-Stars Pump n Run 17U)

-Very long point guard, uses length to bother players. Finds teammates and excels in transition. Solid mid range jumper.

6’4” SF 2013 Michael Milligan of Crespi HS (Independent #3)

Fairly athletic wing who can run. Solid handler, drives fairly well, real good rebounder.

*6’6” SF/PF 2012 Donald Muepo Jr. of Dorsey HS (Independent #4)

-Big, strong, and athletic. Can post up and is good over the left shoulder with nice overall touch. Can face up as well and is a capable mid range jump shooter. Solid rebounder.

6’3” SF/PG 2012 Keywhon Powns of Westchester HS (ING Hoops)

-Athletic wing that can score the ball at a high level. Good ball handler and passer, has good footwork on the perimeter. Competes hard as well.

6’7” SF/PF 2012 Brandon Rosser of Temecula Valley HS (Icemen)

Fairly athletic wing with long arms. Decent handler, ok passer, can defend. Moves ok without the ball, pulls up well half court. Needs some bulk/strength. Nice upside.

6’4” SG/SF 2012 Chris Sterling of Delano HS (BFC Varsity)

-Very athletic wing, can really attack the rim, and can score in multiple ways in the half court. Good mid range jumper, pulls up well half court. Sleeper.

6’3” SG/SF Aamahd Walker of Culver City HS (California Rebels)

-Athletic wing who is as good attacking in the half court as he is in transition. Finishes well and above the rim and is a good shooter off the bounce out to 3.

-Very athletic and active two guard. Good driver, nice rebounder.

-Solid combo guard who runs the team. Handles it, pushes the break, moves well without the ball, does compete.

6’7” PF 2012 Jonathan Benson of Gahr HS (California Rebels)

-Long and active athlete. Attacks the glass as well as the rim. OK driver.

*6’6” SF 2012 Rohjohn Brett of Silverado HS (Team INergy)

-Very athletic wing who attacks the offensive glass and finishes above the rim. Strong driver, decent shooter. Needs to add strength/bulk.

6’2” PG 2013 George Buaku of El Toro HS (Basketball Realm 15U/17U)

-Nice ball handler and passer. Good mid range jumper and capable out to 3.

6’5” SG 2015 Tyler Burch of Ocean View HS (All City 14U)

-Solid ball handler, is ok in transition. Long and is fairly skilled. Ok pull-up, good shooter to 3.

-Capable ball handler and passer, runs the floor hard, ok shooter, solid rebounder.

-Athletic one man, runs real well. Handles fairly well, good passer, does see the floor, makes plays in transition.

-Competitive wing, moves real well without the ball, solid handler, good shooter.

-Quick penetrator, and very good ball handler who can get in the lane. Knows how to run a team.

-Fairly athletic one man, good handler and passer, does see the floor. Effective penetrator who has a nice first step.

-Sees the floor and is a nice passer. Has good burst and uses the hesitation quite well, ok shooter. Excellent prospect.

-Runs well, capable handler, can pull up half court. Moves well without the ball, has a nice first step, can defend.

-Capable driver with a strong build. Good passer with nice court vision. Capable shooter to 3. Makes smart plays.

-Good athlete with long arms. Nice driver, solid ball handler, can go both ways, finishes in transition. OK first step, has a nice floater in the lane, solid rebounder.

-Very good shooter, capable ball handler who passes well. Smart player who makes good decisions. Needs more physical strength.

Report on Bay Area Memorial Day Classic

The first Annual Bay Area Memorial Day Classic was held Saturday to Monday May 28^th – 30^th at Dream Courts in Hayward, CA. Eighty-six teams from though out the west coast participated. Here is a report on the event.

*Taj Adams 6’8’’ SF 2012 Fairfax HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Really good length. Can stretch the floor with his jumper. Nice mid-range game. Good body control on his drives, capable post up player.

Sammy Allen 6’0” SG 2011 Alameda HS (Oakland Bulldogs)

Effective all-around scorer. Solid handler and passer, finishes well in transition, shoots it ok with three point range, good rebounder.

Rodney Cook Jr 5’11’’ PG 2012 Jesse Bethel HS (Oakland Rebels 17U)

Good scoring point guard. Has 3 point range on his shot. Can get to the basket regularly. Good burst with the ball. Needs to get better at running the team.

Drew Dickey 6’9’’ C 2012 St. Francis HS (KWA 17)

Emerging post prospect. Gets very good position in the post. Good touch around the basket. Agile prospect who can play in open court, works hard.

Matt Ennis 6’2” SG/SF 2012 Woodside HS (Roadrunners Elite)
Good shooter with deep range, has nice crossover move. Finishes well, tough-minded.

Tanner Gidding 6’9’’ C 2012 Windsor HS (Oakland Rebels 17U)

Nice size with room to fill out. Good hands. Developing as a defensive presence inside. Needs to improve his offensive repertoire to maximize his potential.

Zack Gordon 6’8” PF 2012 Archbishop Murphy HS (Emerald City Pioneers)

Hard working, has lift, ok mid range shooter, excellent rebounder.

*Kendall Jackson 5’9’’ PG 2012 Bishop O’Dowd HS (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Electric PG in the open court. Very good ball control and vision to make the extra pass, very consistent penetrator with nice quickness. Solid defender. Can look to score more.

Justin Johnson 6’2’’ SG/SF 2012 El Cerrito HS (NorCal Supreme 17)

Physical wing who plays bigger than his size. Has a tough mid-range game on pull-up and post looks. Handles contact well on his finishes. Good positional rebounder.

Kahlil Johnson 6’7’’ PF/SF 2012 Palisades HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Physical combo forward. Rebounds well. Projects as a face up 4-man. Finishes well inside with some bounce and in transition. Good shooting stroke, solid defender and rebounder.

Steven Jones 6’1” PG/SG 2012 Taft HS (ICAN All-Stars)

Hard working combo guard. Finishes well, can shoot from the perimeter, solid defender.

*McKenzie Moore 6’7’’ W/PG 2010 College Park HS (Team 94)

Dynamic playmaker. Good first step getting to the basket. Streaky shooter. Gets his hands on high number of balls defensively. Tournament MVP.

Casey Norris 6’2’’ SG/PG 2012 Newark Memorial HS (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Starting to put it together as a scorer. He is a smooth shooter with three point range. Needs to continue to work on creating own shot, solid ball handler.

Emerging forward who is ready to blow up. Real good rebounder. Agile inside and can step out for mid-range shot. Can improve on his explosion.

Solid handler, real good passer, solid driver with a deceptive 1^st step.

*Elliott Pitts 6’4” W/PG 2013 De La Salle HS (Greenline)

Very skilled competitor. Stepping it up defensively. One of the better shooters in any class in the west.

Big point guard. Pushes the ball well for early offense. Good shot maker around the floor. Plays well in team setting. Very good at breaking down defender one on one.

Enoch Rhemadji 6’3” SG 2012 Westwind Prep (Nor Cal Pharoahs 17)

Big time athlete with an excellent burst of speed. Gets to the basket almost at will. Has a knack for getting steals defensively.

Cody Shelton 6’10’’ C 2014 Irvington HS (Bay Area Rush 17 Varsity)

Thick frame. Good hands receiving the ball. Rebounds the ball well at his size. Needs to develop his post offense.

Christopher Smith 6’3’’ SG 2012 Center HS (E-Time Hoops Elite)

Emerging shooting guard prospect. Good shooter with range. Can also create offense with the dribble, pulls up well in transition. Solid defender.

Stevie Squires 6’2’’ G 2012 Westwind Prep (NorCal Pharaohs 17)

Has a really good burst to his game. Can finish at the rim. Slashing guard type. Excels in transition. Sets teammates up well.

Zach Taylor 6’0’’ PG 2013 Cedarcrest HS (Emerald City Pioneers)

Steady point guard. Can handle the ball and set up the offense consistently. Plays with good maturity level, shoots it well with 3-point range.

Amadi Udenyi 5’11” PG 2012 De La Salle HS (Greenline)
