Belmont Shore Goes 2-0 @ Mayemura Memorial Tribute; Improves to 12-5
Belmont Shore won both of its games on Sunday at the inaugural Mark Mayemura Memorial Tribute held on Sunday at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) - improving its 2012 record to 12-5. Mark was a wonderful person who was friendly and respectful to every person he came into contact with and his service to our hoops community as a grassroots coach in the LA Rockfish program and as overseas agent to several players who had the opportunity to be professionals thanks to Mark's active work in finding them jobs at leagues all over the globe will not be forgotten.
In game I, 6'4" 2015 guard Tyler Dorsey (Ribet Academy/Los Angeles CA) knocked down a 17 foot shot as time expired in OT as Belmont Shore edge Compton Magic 67-65. Dorsey (15 points) led a balanced offensive attack that included 5 players in double-figures. Dorsey had just rushed to the event from LAX - returning from his attendance at this weekend's adidas Nations in Las Vegas NV. 5'9" 2014 point guard Brian Beard Jr. (La Verne Lutheran/La Verne CA) was stellar on the defensive end for Compton Magic, forcing several late 2nd half turnovers that resulted in the game going to OT.
In game II, 6'7" 2014 swingman Daniel Hamilton (St. John Bosco/Bellflower CA) poured in 26 points (most of them in the 2nd half) to lead a Belmont Shore comeback and outlast the Los Angeles Rockfish 71-68. Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA) 6'6" 2014 wing Stanley Johnson's steal and dunk with just seconds remaining preserved the Belmont victory. Johnson had 19 points in the winning effort. 6'3" 2013 lead guard Chance Murray (Price/Los Angeles CA) was impressive for LA Rockfish - scoring 21 points (including several deep "threes" as well as authoritative double-clutch dunk). Underrated 6'1" 2014 point guard Robert Cartwright (Flintridge Prep/LaCanada CA) also played well for LA Rockfish - displaying plenty of poise running his squad as well as very nice pull of jump shot.
Belmont Shore will now focus on next weekend's Magic Memorial Weekend tourney (May 26-28) at the brand new MAP Sports Complex (Garden Grove CA).
