The Trojan Wrestling team traveled to Rensselaer for their Super Dual Invite
The Trojans started out the day with Lewis Cass. We knew that this was going to be a tough match as the Kings are ranked #4 in the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaching Association rankings. The wrestlers came out fired up and got a great victory over a very solid team 42-30.
The next meet was against Rensselaer. The Bombers are a lot like us with a few holes in their lineup, but we were able to capitalize on theirs more than they could ours and we won 48-28.
The South Newton Rebels were up next. We cruised to a very good win, while we gave a few of our JV wrestlers a chance to get on the mat. The final score was 60-22.
We were 3-0 in our pool so we had to wrestle the top team out of the other pool, which was the West Lafayette Red Devils. We started out the meet with a pin by Rodney Oliver putting us up 6-0. The Red Devils were able to get an 18-6 lead before Tyler Wireman was able to get a pin to make the score 12-18. A pair of wins by Wyatt McIlvain and Cody Denton brought the score to 18-18. The Red Devils would stretch the lead to 30-18, before Parker Fritz picked up a win to make the score 21-30. Steven Garcia was up next, but injured his knee early in the match and tried hard to continue, but had to injury default making the score 36-21. With only three wrestlers left we knew it be hard to win, but not impossible. Logan Wuethrich won his match with a decision which made the score 24-36. So with only two wrestlers left to go we would need to pin both opponents just to tie up the score. First up was Cameron Owens whose opponent was undefeated on the season and Cameron was able to get a pin in the first period bringing the score to 30-36. Last up was Brice Watts who also scored a first period pin to tie the score 36-36. We lost the match on the fifth criteria that states that the team with the most 6 point wins is the winner. We had four pins to their three, but because we forfeited two weight classes that gave them five wins to our four. We placed second, with West Lafayette taking first. A tough loss, but it shows that we are improving every week.
We ended the day with a very good win over River Forest 60-24.
We had four wrestlers who were Weight Class Champions, Wyatt McIlvain at 126, Cody Denton at 132, Logan Wuethrich at 170, and Brice Watts at 195.
Individual records for the week are as follows, Tyler Wireman 4-0,Wyatt McIlvain 5-0, Cody Denton 5-0, Jaxon Mayhew 2-3, Parker Fritz 5-0, Luke Owens 1-2, Steven Garcia 1-1, Logan Wuethrich 5-0, Cameron Owens 3-1, Eli Owens 1-0, Brice Watts 5-0, Rodney Oliver 4-1, and Lazarus Conley 4-1. The team record for the day was 4-1, and the season record is 8-3.
The Trojans travel to Caston on both Friday and Saturday for their TenTeam Invite.
