The 2009 Track Party Is Over, but OH What a Year It Was
June 7, 2009 By wfrunning Behnke of Weyauwega-Fremont High School
Two Relays, 3 Individuals in Six Events, and yet the Division 2 Track Sectional at Two Rivers STILL gobbled up the Wega-Fremont track stars, and left the Indians out of the State Track Meet for just the third time since 1999.
It was an absolute buzz saw, in the Two Rivers Division 2 Track Sectional On Friday May 29, 2009. Take some of the best track programs in the entire state at the Division 2 level, plus a couple of terrific programs that move back and forth between D-1 and D-2 every couple of years, throw in some of the best coaches and athletes anywhere, and you have the ingredients for triumph and tragedy depending on your point of view.
The 800 meter relay team of Dacia Goetsch, Joanna Schroeder, Carlie Akey, and Devery DeSantis were fantastic running the best time of the year, and it was good for ninth place. Huh????? A time of 1:52.63 just wasn't quite good enough.
The 1600 meter relay team of Dacia Goetsch, Dani Johnson, Joanna Schroeder, and Katherine Cloninger run the fourth fastest Wega-Fremont girls time ever, and it's good for ninth place. Huh?????? What's with that. 4:13.40 just wasn't quite good enough.
Ellen Schroeder competed in both the 800 meters and 1600 meters and ran her second fastest times of the season in each one, and placed 12th out of sixteen in each race. A time of 5:48.65 and another time of 2:34.22 just weren't quite good enough.
Nate Volz ran his fastest 800 meters of the season and his second fastest 400 meter race ever, and it just wasn't good enough on this day in this competition. Nate's times of 2:03.08 for the 800 and 53.01 for the 400 were excellent times, but were not meant to be in this slobber knocker of a meet. These races were just brutal all evening long. Nate did manage to place eighth in the 800 meters and 10th in the 400 dash.
Katherine Cloninger ran her way to a time of 60.18 seconds for the 400 meter dash and came in 5th as the sectional had four girls all break one minute for the one lap sprint. 60.18 just wasn't quite good enough in this sectional but would have qualified for state in every other sectional. Katherine's other event, and her time matched her best of the season, but was only good enough for thirteenth place.
And just how food was the competition? Lots of people have asked that question. Well, here's a rundown for the state finishes for athletes in the events where Wega had sectional qualifiers.
Girls 200 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 5th, 6th, and 8th at state.
Boys 400 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 2nd, 4th, and 7th at state.
Girls 400 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 3rd, 4th, and 6th, & 9th at state.
Boys 800 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 1st & 8th at state.
Girls 800 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 7th at state.
Girls 1600 Meters: Two Rivers qualifiers took 4th, 6th, and 8th at state.
Girls 800 Relay: Two Rivers qualifiers took 1st and 7th at state.
Girls 1600 Relay: Two Rivers qualifiers took 1st, 4th, 6th, and 8th at state.
Boy, you talk about flying in the face of a tornado. Wega ran into some of the biggest strength events in the entire state right here in their own sectional. The Two Rivers meet was a slaughterhouse for great talent again this year.
And so the season is done. All that is left to take care of the season ending awards. The track banquet will take place on Monday, June 15 in the high school commons with a pot-luck dinner to begin at 5:30. The awards show will follow. |
